Some Democrats frustrated over Biden reversing course, pardoning son Hunter

Already reeling from their November defeats, Democrats now are grappling with President Joe Biden's pardoning of his son for federal crimes after the party spent years slamming Donald Trump as a threat to democracy who disregarded the law. The president pardoned Hunter Biden late Sunday evening, reversing his previous pledges with a grant of clemency that covers more than a decade of any federal crimes his son might have committed. The 82-year-old president said in a statement that his son's prosecution on charges of tax evasion and falsifying a federal weapons purchase form were politically motivated. He believes in the justice system, but he also believes that politics infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who along with Biden and other White House officials insisted for months that Hunter Biden would not get a pardon. That explanation did not satisfy some Democrats, angry that Biden's reversal could make it

Jill Biden is out campaigning again but not for her husband this time

Jill Biden wasted no time after she stepped up to the microphone at a suburban Detroit restaurant. Now some have come to (the) Detroit area recently and thrown around some insults, but from what I've seen this is a vibrant, thriving city, she said. It was a swipe at Republican Donald Trump, who aimed a recent dart at the most populous city in a critical Midwestern battleground state. The first lady was back on the campaign trail for the first time in months, but no longer pushing Democrats to support her husband, President Joe Biden. Instead, she is now putting her energy into boosting Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden endorsed for president after he dropped his reelection bid. On Tuesday, the first lady wrapped up a five-day swing through five battleground states. While the race itself has changed, what remains unchanged for Jill Biden is her effort to highlight contrasts with Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, in the hope that Democrats can keep the former president

Biden announces $150 mn research grants as 'moonshot' push to fight cancer

President Joe Biden is zeroing in on the policy goals closest to his heart now that he's no longer seeking a second term, visiting New Orleans to promote his administration's "moonshot" initiative aiming to dramatically reduce cancer deaths. The president and first lady Jill Biden on Tuesday toured medical facilities that receive federal funding to investigate cancer treatments at Tulane University, where researchers demonstrated using a piece of raw meat how they are working to improve scanning technology to quickly distinguish between healthy and cancerous cells during surgeries. The pair then championed the announcement of $150 million in awards from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. Those will support eight teams of researchers around the country working on ways to help surgeons more successfully remove tumours from people with cancer. It brings the total amount awarded by the agency to develop breakthrough treatments for cancers to $400 million. Cancer surgery .

Cooling rhetoric doesn't mean will stop telling truth about Trump: Biden

President Joe Biden returned to the campaign trail Tuesday for the first time since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, continuing his call to calm the divisive rhetoric on both sides, but also arguing that doing so "doesn't mean we should stop telling the truth as he tore into his Republican rival. Addressing the NAACP convention in Las Vegas, Biden said addressing political violence in the country should mean curbing all kinds of bloodshed including better combating police brutality and banning weapons like the AR-style rifle used in the weekend attack on Trump. It's time for an important conversation in this country. Our politics have become too heated, Biden said. That didn't stop him from listing why Trump's administration was hell for Black Americans, including the former president's mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic, skyrocketing unemployment amid early lockdowns and attempts to, as Biden put it, erase Black history. Just because we must lowe

Biden firm on his candidature, says it's time for intra-party drama to end

US President Joe Biden, in an open letter to congressional Democrats, stood firm on Monday against calls for him to drop his reelection candidacy and called for an end to the intra-party drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal public debate performance. Biden's efforts to shore up a deeply anxious Democratic Party came as lawmakers returned to Washington confronting a choice -- work to revive his campaign or try to edge out the party leader, a make-or-break time for his campaign and their own political futures. Biden wrote in the two-page letter that "the question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it's time for it to end". He stressed that the party has "one job", which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November. "We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election," Biden said in the letter, distributed by his reelection campaign. "Any weakening of resolve or lack of

After Joe Biden's debate debacle, Jill reassures that they are still all in

Jill Biden was right at her husband's side Saturday as they exited Air Force One to head for a pair of campaign stops at luxurious vacation homes on Long Island. And she got straight to the point when it was her turn to introduce the president at a tony fundraiser. Joe isn't just the right person for the job. He's the only person for the job, she declared. The first lady also told donors, Anyone can tell you what they want to do, but Joe Biden can tell you what he's done with his judgment, his experience, and his relationships with leaders across the globe. The first lady is trying to rally support for her husband after a dreadful performance in Thursday's presidential debate created fresh worries about President Joe Biden's age and his ability to compete in November's election and to serve another four years. The community college professor has been by her husband's side since he exited the debate stage as he faces what could be a defining challenge of his presidency the presiden

Joe Biden offers love, pride for Hunter's addiction recovery after verdict

President Joe Biden kept his distance from the courtroom where his son Hunter stood trial on felony gun charges to avoid any appearance of meddling but his quick statement reacting to the jury's guilty verdict Tuesday spoke to where his heart has been all along. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today, Biden wrote. So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. After the verdict was announced, the White House canceled press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre's scheduled briefing and announced that Biden would spend the evening in Delaware. Biden aides and allies have privately worried about the toll a guilty verdict would take on the 81-year-old president, for whom personal loss has been closely intertwined with his public life. They say the president is less worried about any personal political cost he might incur, than concern

Jurors will resume deliberations in federal gun case against Hunter Biden

Jurors will resume deliberations on Tuesday in the criminal case against President Joe Biden's son over a gun Hunter Biden bought in 2018 when prosecutors say he was in the throes of a crack cocaine addiction. Jurors deliberated for less than an hour before leaving the federal courthouse in Delaware on Monday afternoon. They are weighing whether Hunter Biden is guilty of three felonies in the case pitting the younger Biden against his father's Justice Department in the middle of the president's reelection campaign. Prosecutors spent last week using testimony from his ex-wife and former girlfriends, photos of Hunter Biden with drug paraphernalia and other tawdry evidence to make the case that he lied when he checked no on the form at the gun shop that asked whether he was an unlawful user of, or addicted to drugs. He knew he was using drugs. That's what the evidence shows. And he knew he was addicted to drugs. That's what the evidence shows, prosecutor Leo Wise told jurors in his ...

Biden welcomes Japanese PM Kishida as they aim for deeper bilateral ties

US President Joe Biden has welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House as the two leaders seek to further boost bilateral ties amid shared concerns about China's increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. Hunter Biden's attorneys push California judge to toss out tax charges

Attorneys for Hunter Biden asked a judge Wednesday to toss out the tax case accusing him of a four-year scheme to avoid paying USD 1.4 million in taxes while living an extravagant lifestyle. President Joe Biden's son has pleaded not guilty to the nine felony and misdemeanour tax offences. His attorneys argued the prosecution is politically motivated, was tainted by leaks from IRS agents who claimed publicly the case was mishandled and includes some allegations from before he moved to California. Prosecutors framed the claims as far-fetched during the three-hour hearing. Prosecutor Leo Wise scoffed at the idea that the case was tainted by the IRS agents "who I couldn't have picked out of a lineup". Defence attorney Abbe Lowell, on the other hand, maintained the case was hopelessly contaminated by partisan politics, calling it "the least ordinary prosecution a person could imagine". US District Judge Mark C Scarsi appeared to be sceptical, telling Lowell the hard evidence for some of

Car plows into vehicle in Biden's motorcade outside Delaware campaign HQ

A car plowed into a parked SUV that was guarding President Joe Biden 's motorcade on Sunday night while the president was leaving a visit to his campaign headquarters. The president and first lady Jill Biden were unharmed. While Biden was walking from the campaign office to his waiting armoured SUV, a sedan hit a US Secret Service vehicle that was being used to close off intersections near the headquarters for the president's departure. The sedan then tried to continue into a closed-off intersection, before Secret Service personnel surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn and instructed the driver to put his hands up. Biden was ushered into his waiting vehicle, where his wife was already seated, before being driven swiftly back to their home. His schedule was otherwise unaffected by the incident. The Secret Service did not immediately comment on the incident.

Biden and first lady will travel to Maine to mourn after mass shooting

President Joe Biden will travel to Maine later this week to mourn with the community of Lewiston after 18 people were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in state history, the White House said on Wednesday. Thirteen people were injured in the October 25 shootings at a bar and a bowling alley. Biden and first lady Jill Biden will go Friday to pay their respects to the victims, meet with first responders and others and will grieve with families and community members, the White House said in a statement. The alleged gunman, Robert Card, 40, was found dead of an apparent suicide after a dayslong manhunt that led officials to cancel school and order residents to stay indoors. Investigators have yet to establish a motive but have increasingly focused on the mental health of Card, who was a firearms instructor.
