Few newspapers successfully graduated into digital age: Aveek Sarkar

A mere 5-6 newspapers have successfully overcome challenges and graduated into the digital age, said Aveek Sarkar, chairman of the PTI board of directors on Friday. In such a scenario, despite constraints, Anandabazar online attracted some 250 crore visitors to its website, said Sarkar also the Editor Emeritus of the ABP group at a glittering awards ceremony here celebrating the Year's Best in various fields ranging from academics, sports, business to arts and entertainment. More than breaking news, the website has focused on creating its own unique reports in order to stand out, he explained. We believe in creating a holistic reading environment. For this, we want our readers to come and read our writings. Not just the headlines, Sarkar said. In an era of short-form news, Anandabazar online was encouraging readers to try out 'long reads' which in Bengali, the media baron termed as, dirgha path, adding that this has resulted in readers spending more than 300 crore minutes over the

Canadian Broadcasting Corp 'pause' Twitter after 'govt-funded media' label

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation paused its use of Twitter on Monday after the social media platform owned by Elon Musk stamped CBC's account with a label the public broadcaster says is intended to undermine its credibility. Twitter labelled CBC/Radio-Canada "government-funded media" the same label that prompted National Public Radio in the US to similarly quit Twitter last Wednesday. Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to communicate with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of the work they do to allow our independence to be falsely described in this way, CBC spokesman Leon Mar said in a statement announcing the change Monday afternoon. Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts," the statement said. CBC has sent a letter to Twitter asking the company to re-examine the designation. CBC does not meet those criteria, Mar argued, because it is publicl

Indian journalist Rana Ayyub receives support from US Senator Patrick Leahy

A prominent US Senator has expressed support for Indian journalist Rana Ayyub, noting that her work is driven by a sense of purpose and a love for her country and the ideals for which it stands. In a statement on Thursday, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said, Rana Ayyub is an award-winning Indian journalist who has courageously reported on religious violence, extrajudicial killings, and other matters of public interest in India. Her important work is driven by a sense of purpose and a love for her country and the ideals for which it stands. Yet she faces online harassment and trolling, death threats, and baseless government retaliation for her reporting," Leahy said. "Despite the immense pressure to silence her by government officials who should be protecting her, she continues to expose the abuses of those in power, the Senator from Vermont added. Citing the Committee to Protect Journalists, Leahy said that in 2022 alone at least 38 journalists were killed, 294 were imprisoned,

If journalism falters, democracy will collapse: Justice Srikrishna

Former Supreme Court judge B N Srikrishna has called for preserving the independence of journalists to ensure smooth functioning of democracy in the country. If journalism as a profession falters, democracy will collapse, Justice Srikrishna said Friday night after presenting the RedInk awards for excellence in journalism, instituted by the Mumbai Press Club. Speak the truth to the powers that be," he said. "Two professions have to be necessarily independent, a judge and a journalist. If they falter, democracy collapses, he added. Justice Srikrishna said a journalist who loses his independence is as bad as a judge who has lost his independence. Remember, you are in a profession where honesty is really the best policy, said the noted jurist, who headed the Srikrishna Commission that investigated causes and apportioned blame for the Mumbai riots of 199293. We all know about the four pillars of democracy: judiciary, legislature executive and the press or the fourth estate. If the firs
