A court here has granted bail to the 41-year-old man arrested for allegedly assaulting and splashing Congress Lok Sabha candidate Kanhaiya Kumar with ink, saying it has to balance the state's interest of maintaining public order with the accused's right to personal liberty. On May 17, when Kumar, the Congress candidate for the North East Delhi seat, was coming out of ally Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office in New Usmanpur after a meeting with local Councillor Chhaya Sharma, a group of people attacked him. The Delhi Police arrested one of the accused, Ajay Kumar, on Tuesday morning. The investigating officer (IO) said it was necessary to prevent him from committing similar offences. Ajay Kumar's counsel, however, vehemently opposed the plea and sought bail for his client. BJP candidate from the North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat Manoj Tiwari on Sunday said the fight in his constituency is between those who promote "tukde-tukde" (divisive) ideology and those who chant "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". The Congress has pitted Kanhaiya Kumar against the BJP's Tiwari who is seeking a hattrick of victory in North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat. Campaigning for the BJP in the constituency, Union Minister Giriraj Singh referred to his victory against Kumar in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Bihar's Begusarai. "A person's poster has been pasted in Begusarai who is a member of the tukde-tukde gang and is missing there. He has changed the party now," he said. Kumar contested against Singh in 2019 as a CPI candidate. He later crossed over to the Congress. The former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president was charged with sedition by the Delhi Police over "anti-India slogans" that were allegedly raised on the university campus on February 9, 2016. The incident happened outside the AAP office in the New Usmanpur area as he was coming out after a party meeting with local Councillor Chhaya Sharma. Rahul Gandhi's decision to field the former students' union leader in North East Delhi is an attempt to breathe new life into the party in the national capital
Terming the BJP's '400 paar' slogan "perception management", Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar says such claims are a "malicious attempt" to alter the reality and are reflective of the ruling party's fear of defeat. In an interaction with PTI editors at the news agency's headquarters here, he questioned the BJP's confidence about the NDA crossing the 400-figure mark in the Lok Sabha polls, asking if it is so then why is it inducting leaders who cannot win polls while in the Congress and are like "used cartridges". Kumar also acknowledged that there was a "failure" on the part of old parties that had been in power earlier due to which the people got attracted towards the "extremism of the BJP" but said the change in the situation was only a matter of time as India's society is based on love and equality, and stands for co-existence and tolerance. Asked about the BJP giving the slogan of '400 paar' and whether does it not seem that the opposition is lagging behind in the battle of ...

Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Tuesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party of failing to deliver on its promises and claimed the people in Delhi, where AAP is in power, didn't get oxygen cylinders during the second COVID-19 wave. He also alleged that AAP never delivered on promises made during the 2011 anti-corruption movement, after forming the government in Delhi. "Everyone in Delhi knows that promises made during Anna Hazare's Andolan (in 2011) were eventually shelved (by AAP). Then, they started saying they are improving schools. I was in Delhi during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like people not getting oxygen cylinders at the Ahmedabad civil hospital, the cylinders were not available in Delhi also," Kumar told reporters at the state Congress headquarters. He said AAP is confusing people in Gujarat who are fed up with BJP and looking for an alternative. "There is a difference between what is being told and what is being delivered. Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Thursday took swipes at the Trinamool Congress Party and Aam Aadmi Party for entering the fray for the coming Assembly elections in Goa. Congress joined hands with these two parties at the national level because they were anti-BJP, but in Goa, where Congress has the capability to defeat the BJP, they rushed to contest polls, he said. Kumar was addressing Congress workers at Mapusa town. He also targeted the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the security breach during Modi's Punjab visit. The BJP says prime minister does not belong to any one party, so why was he campaigning for the party, Kumar asked. The former JNU student leader also said the BJP accuses him of being anti-Hindu, but the fact remains that his name is 'Kanhaiya'. They call me anti-defence forces, I would like to tell them that 16 people from my family are in defence forces, I belong to a family which gets pension of freedom fighter, he said.
RJD on Friday mocked Kanhaiya Kumar's induction into the Congress, saying that the former JNU student is like "another Navjot Singh Sidhu" who would "destroy" the grand old party.
