Wrong to categorise commercial films as theatrical releases: Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar says he doesn't believe in the common perception among storytellers that commercial films are meant for theatrical release and art-house films are ideal for digital platforms. Johar was speaking at the trailer launch of his upcoming production Govinda Naam Mera, which is slated to be released on the streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar on December 16. "This divide, I think we have created ourselves... that commercial films are theatrical and that alternate or slightly off-the-cuff films for digital (release). "We thought Disney+ Hotstar is a wide platform and the film can reach many more houses. I believe this mainstream masala twisted entertainer ('Govinda...') has got a beautiful house. So, there are no second thoughts, the producer told reporters on Sunday night here. Starring Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Kiara Advani, "Govinda Naam Mera" is a comedy crime-thriller that tells the tale of an underdog. It is directed by Shashank Khaitan. The film is yet .

Karan Johar deactivates Twitter account 'to make way for positive energies'

Filmmaker Karan Johar on Monday said he is bidding adieu to microblogging site Twitter to make way for "positive energies only". The 50-year-old director, often subjected to abuse and trolling on social media, announced his departure from the platform in a tweet. "Making space for more positive energies only and this is step one towards that. Goodbye Twitter!" Johar said. Hours after the announcement, his Twitter account was deactivated and the page displayed the message: 'This account doesn't exist'. The filmmaker, known for helming "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", and "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil", had 17.2 million followers on Twitter. He continues to be active on Facebook and Instagram. Johar's next directorial venture "Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani" will arrive next February. He recently wrapped the seventh season of his celebrity talk show "Koffee With Karan".

Mumbai Police arrest actor, film critic KRK over 'defamatory' tweet

The Mumbai Police have arrested actor and film critic Kamal Rashid Khan, popularly known as KRK, in connection with an alleged defamatory tweet posted by him, an official said on Tuesday. Khan was nabbed from the Mumbai airport late Monday night after he arrived from Dubai, the official from Malad police station said. The police did not reveal details of the tweet. The official said a look out circular had earlier been issued against him. An FIR was also registered against him in 2020 under various Indian Penal Code sections including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (punishment for defamation), and provisions of the Information Technology Act, he said. The city police came to know about his arrival on Monday and immediately arrested him, the official said. In 2016, Khan had claimed that he was paid to tweet in favour of a movie of filmmaker Karan Johar.
