Haryana khaps running awareness campaign against drugs, sensitising youth

Several khap panchayats in Haryana are running an awareness campaign against the ill-effects of drugs and also sensitising people in the rural areas on the importance of environmental protection. A prominent khap leader said many khap panchayats (caste councils) are involved in the campaign against drugs as they are apprehensive that the menace can spread in Haryana just like it has in neighbouring Punjab. "Our khap and many other khaps in Rohtak, Sonipat, Jind, Hisar and elsewhere are running the campaign against the menace of drugs. We make people, especially youngsters, aware of the ill-effects of drugs and prevent addiction," Tek Ram Kandela, the head of the Sarv Jatiya Kandela Khap, said. Khap, farmer activists block Rohtak-Delhi NH in Haryana's Jhajjar district

Activists of some Khaps and farmers on Wednesday blocked the Rohtak-Delhi national highway in Jhajjar district as part of a 'Haryana Bandh' call given in support of protesting wrestlers, farmers and other issues. Ramesh Dalal, a senior leader of the Bhumi Bachao Sangharsh Samiti outfit, led the protesters who squatted on NH-9 in Bahadurgarh and imposed a blockade. Vehicles were seen stranded on the road as a result of this. Jhajjar Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain told PTI that they were trying to persuade the protesters to lift the blockade. A "khap mahapanchayat" here on Friday demanded the arrest of outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexually harassing some women wrestlers, and gave the government time till June 9 to act on its demand. Over 69% voting recorded in second phase of Haryana panchayat elections

Over 69 per cent voter turnout was recorded on Wednesday in the polling to elect members of zila parishad and panchayat samitis in nine districts of Haryana in the second phase of the panchayat polls, officials said here. Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh said polling was held peacefully. Voting for 1,244 panchayat samiti members and 158 zila parishad members in 57 blocks of nine districts -- Ambala, Charkhi Dadri, Gurugram, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Rewari, Rohtak, Sirsa, and Sonipat -- began at 7 am and continued till 6 pm. There were 48,67,132 eligible voters in the second phase. In a statement, Singh said, "33,44,672 voters exercised their voting rights till 7.30 pm, which is 69.1 per cent of the total voters of these nine districts." 72.4% votes cast by early evening in first phase of Haryana panchayat polls

The first of the three-phase polling to elect panches and sarpanches in nine Haryana districts saw 72.4 per cent people casting their votes by early evening and the number is expected to go up, officials said. The polling is held in Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Panchkula, Panipat and Yamunanagar. There are 49 lakh voters altogether in these districts, they said. Stray incidents were reported from Nuh and Jhajjar districts. In Nuh, stone pelting was reported between rival groups in two villages, though police said these incidents did not occur at the polling booth and that the poll process remained unaffected. There were reports of some injuries. "There is no untoward incident at the polling booth. However, there were some cases of fight and stone pelting in two villages," Nuh Superintendent of Police Varun Singla told PTI over phone.
