The CBI on Monday interrogated RG Kar hospital's former principal Sandip Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal together in connection with the rape and murder of the doctor, officials said. Ghosh and Mondal, the officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, were asked to detail their activities on August 9 immediately after they got the news about the doctor being found dead at the hospital, they said. They were made to sit face to face and questioned, a CBI officer said. "They were asked about their activities after hearing the news of the death of the doctor, why there was an unnecessary delay in registering the FIR and why the post-mortem examination was conducted even when no formal FIR was lodged," the officer said. "They were also asked about the various phone calls between them when police started investigating the crime," he said. The interrogation is likely to continue late in the night, he added. Former principal of RG Kar hospital Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal were on Sunday produced before a court here on Sunday by the CBI in connection with the rape-murder of a doctor at the medical facility. "We will seek a three-day remand for them in the Sealdah court, an officer said. The CBI, which is probing the case, had on Saturday evening added charges of tampering with evidence against Ghosh, who is currently in judicial custody, and arrested Mondal. Mondal was arrested for allegedly tampering evidence, delay in registering the FIR among other charges, the officer said. The police officer was held after he failed to provide satisfying answers during questioning by the CBI officers on Saturday. The central probe agency had arrested Ghosh on September 2 in a case of financial irregularities at the hospital. A ragpicker was injured in a blast that took place in central Kolkata on Saturday, a police officer said. The explosion occurred when he was "near a plastic bag" at the crossing of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road. "The injured person was identified as 58-year-old Bapi Das, who lives on a footpath beside S N Banerjee Road. He is a ragpicker," the officer said. The injured person suffered injuries in his right wrist and is being treated at the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital. "The area was cordoned off and a bomb disposal squad reached the place. They checked the bag and the vicinity," he said.

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to submit a fresh report by September 17 on the probe in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate medic at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud perused the report filed in a sealed cover by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI. "A status report has been filed by CBI, it appears that investigation is in progress, we direct the CBI to file fresh status report...We don't want to guide the CBI on its investigation," the bench said.
