Asked about record student suicides in Rajasthan's Kota this year, Pradhan said, "it is a very sensitive issue. No lives should be lost..they are our kids. They do not even have maturity or knowledge about what is happening to them. It is our collective responsibility to keep students stress free." One of the major reasons behind poor mental health of students in this coaching hub that often prompts them to take the extreme step is "parents telling them there is no going back", according to police and district officials attempting preventive measures as record student suicides rock "Kota factory". Top coaching institutes also claim that majority parents refuse to accept feedback provided to them and want their children to continue anyway in their preparation for engineering and medical entrance exams. From reaching out to parents about possible signs of depression in their child, no aptitude for the particular subject or career, inability to live away from home, police and coaching institutes say their communications to parents about such issues are often met with resistance and majority of them refuse to accept these. "Amid our interactions with the students, we found a student who was visibly depressed. I decided to call his father. His response was 'ye to auron ko depress k

Within four hours, two NEET aspirants allegedly committed suicide in two separate incidents in Rajasthan's Kota on Sunday, taking the total toll to 22 this year, police said. There are no friends but only competitors in the country's coaching capital popularly known as "Kota factory", say students and experts as the government struggles to keep a check on the spate of suicides among engineering and medical aspirants. Authorities say 20 students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have ended their lives so far in 2023 -- highest for any year. Last year, the figure was 15. Battling with packed schedules, cut-throat competition, constant pressure to do better, burden of parents' expectations and homesickness, students say they often find themselves alone with no one to talk to and share their feelings with. Experts warn that parents also see friendships as potential distractions for their wards and discourage them to make friends when they are here for coaching. "There is no concept of friendship here...there are only competitors. Every student sitting next to you is seen as an additional burden to fight with. Unlike schools and colleges, nobody shares
Expressing concern over the rising cases of student suicide in Kota, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday directed officials to form a committee to provide suggestions on preventing them. The committee will be composed of all stakeholders, including representatives from coaching institutes, parents and doctors, and it will submit its report in 15 days, Gehlot said. Twenty students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have died by suicide so far this year, authorities say. Last year, the figure was 15. Speaking at a review meeting on suicide cases among IIT and NEET aspirants in the coaching hub, the chief minister highlighted the burden being put on students studying in class 9 and 10. Enrolling Class 9 and 10 students in coaching institutes puts extra burden on them since they also have to appear for board exams, Gehlot said. You call students of class 9th and 10th. You are committing a crime in a way. It is like as if IIT is god. As soon as students come to coachin
Worried by a spate of suicides by hanging, the authorities in this coaching hub have taken a desperate measure ordering hostels to install a spring device on ceiling fans to stop students from taking their lives. Twenty students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have died by suicide so far this year, authorities say. Last year, the figure was 15. The anti-suicide measure was discussed on August 12 at a meeting between Kota officials and other stakeholders. On Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner O P Bunkar issued the directions, demanding strict compliance. Action will be taken against hostel owners and their managements if the directions on fans are not followed, the administration said. This is how the device works: If an object weighing more than 20 kilos is hung from the fan, the spring attached to it expands, making it impossible for someone to commit suicide by this method. Simultaneously, a siren goes off. Back in 2017, the Kota Hostels Association had discussed the ...
