Ex-employee attempts suicide at Mantralaya to protest forced

A former government employee allegedly tried to end life by drinking a floor-cleaner at Mantralaya, headquarters of the Maharashtra government here, on Friday to protest 'forced' retirement, police said. It is the latest in a series of similar incidents at Mantralaya this year. Dilip Sonawane, who retired as peon, allegedly tried to drink phenyl (used for floor cleaning) outside the office of Additional Chief Secretary of the Labour Department. He was stopped by some employees before he could drink the content of the bottle he was carrying, a police official said. Police detained him and took him to a hospital for medical examination, the official added. Sonawane had been forced to opt for early retirement following a departmental inquiry against him, the official said. Thursday was his last day at work. SC refuses to entertain plea seeking minimum wages for unorganised sector workers

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL filed by social activist Swami Agnivesh seeking minimum wages for around 50 crore workers in the unorganised sector. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and S K Kaul asked the activist to approach the authorities concerned for the relief. "We are not inclined to hear this (petition). You can go to the authorities with your grievances," the bench said. The PIL was seeking minimum wages for workers in the unorganised sector. It said 50 crore workers are employed in the unorganised sector and their rights under Article 14 (Equality before law), 21 (Protection of life and personal liberty) and 39 (principles of policy to be followed by the State) have been violated. The plea said that millions of workers including domestic workers, building and construction workers, sewer workers, brick kiln and stone quarry workers, those in loading and unloading goods sheds, parcel offices of railways, docks and ports etc., cartload drivers, hand .

BJP MPs block adoption of parliamentary panel report critical of GDP calculation methodology

A parliamentary panel headed by veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, in a draft report prepared by it, has questioned the mechanism for calculating the country's GDP and asserted that the methodology needs review to reflect the ground reality. The report, which was tabled in the Estimates Committee meeting on Thursday, created a rift among the BJP parliamentarians of the panel, as Joshi was in favour of adopting the report, while other party members led by MP Nishikant Dubey strongly opposed it. While Joshi was opposed by his own party MPs over the report, the opposition parliamentarians came out in his support at the meeting, according to a source who was present there. "Detailed examination reveals several inadequacies in the GDP measuring mechanism, most noticeable being depletion of natural resources not being taken into consideration," the report stated. Software engineers most sought-after by companies in India: LinkedIn study

Software engineers and app developers are among the most sought-after professionals by companies across sectors in the country, says a report by professional networking platform LinkedIn. The Microsoft-owned firm, in its maiden 'Workforce Report for India', said job postings for software engineers were the highest across multiple industries in the first six months of 2018 on its platform. The volume of job postings for software engineers was twice than the demand for application developers, which emerged in the second place, it added. Death toll in Bhilai Steel Plant explosion rises to 13

One more employee who was critically injured in an explosion at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Durg district of Chhattisgarh died Thursday, taking the death toll in the incident to 13, police said. Senior technician of Energy Management Department Satya Vijay, who had suffered over 80 per cent burns, died at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital Research Centre in Bhilai, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shukla told PTI. Nine people had died and 14 others were injured on Tuesday due to a blast in a gas pipeline at the plant of the state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Army starts skill development course for Kishtwar youths

The Indian Army has launched a skill development programme for the youths of mountainous district of Kishtwar to help them become self-employed and and economically independent, an officer said Thursday. The Army took the initiative for the youths of remote villages of the district in collaboration with National Skill Development Council and started a plumbing course Tuesday at "Youth Employment Guidance Node" at Kishtwar, he said. The 3-month-long course, which started for a batch of 30 youths would end on January 9, 2019, he said, adding the youths would be awarded certificates from the institute after completion of the course. Cabinet approves PLB for Railway employees

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for Railway employees, equivalent to 78 days' wages for the financial year 2017-18 for all eligible non-gazetted employees. It excludes Railway Protection Force/Railway Protection Security Force (RPF/RPSF) personnel.Around 11.91 lakh non-gazetted Railway employees are likely to benefit from the decision. The total estimated cost of the PLB is Rs. 2044.31 crore. The wage calculation ceiling prescribed for payment of PLB to the eligible non-gazetted railway employees is Rs.7000 per month. The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs. 17,951 for 78 days.The Productivity Linked Bonus on Railway covers all non-gazetted railway employees (excluding RPF/RPSF personnel) who are spread over the entire country. Payment of PLB to eligible railway employees is made each year before the Dusshera holidays.The decision of the Cabinet shall be implemented before the holidays for this year. For

Bhilai Steel Plant blast: CEO removed, 2 other suspended

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bhilai Steel Plant was removed and two other senior officials were suspended Wednesday, a day after a blast at the plant which claimed the lives of 12 employees. Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh announced the action against the officials after visiting the injured employees of the plant at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital in Bhilai town, located around 30 km from here in Chhattisgarh. Nepal: 5 Indian workers injured in factory blast

Cabinet nod to merger of regulatory bodies NCVT, NDSA

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the merger of regulatory institutions the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and the National Skill Development Agency (NDSA) into the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET). "The NCVET will regulate the functioning of entities engaged in vocational education and training, both long-term and short-term, and establish minimum standards for the functioning of such entities," an official statement said. It will be headed by a chairperson and will have executive and non-executive members. EDMC sanitation workers in Delhi call off strike

After nearly a month-long stir, sanitation workers of the cash-strapped EDMC Tuesday ended their strike after the civic authority agreed to accept their demands, a union leader claimed. The workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) had gone on strike on September 12 demanding regular payment of salaries and regularisation of workers. "We called off our strike today, as the mayor gave us assurance that contractual workers would be regularised in a phased manner," president of MCD Swachhata Karmchari Union Sanjay Gahlot said. The union also decided to call off the strike keeping public interest in mind as heaps of garbage, dumped at public places, were posing a health risk, he added. 80 per cent contract workers to be retained: Delhi cabinet

Delhi cabinet Tuesday decided that 80 per cent of existing number of contract workers hired by a contractor for discharging government services will be retained in case of a new contract. A meeting of Delhi cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also decided to extend the age of disengagement of home guards from existing 50 to 60 years. The government also gave in principle nod to soon hire 6000 more home guards, said an official statement. Delhi government gives service or manpower contract for various purposes to contractors who do the hiring of workers. When the contract period gets over or the contractor is changed, fresh manpower is hired and those working earlier are removed, it said. "This causes huge miseries to these poor people. PDD's need-based, casual workers stage protest in Jammu

The Power Development Department's need-based and casual workers held a rally here on Tuesday in support of their demands, including release of pending wages. Over 3400 workers, mostly working as linesmen, went on a 72-hour strike on Monday demanding authorities to release their pending wages. The rally was held at Jewal chowk here. PDD need-based workers union president Akhil Sharma claimed that 7,500 workers in Kashmir province were adjusted as daily wagers and are being provided monthly wages. "We appeal to the state administration to look into our genuine demands sympathetically as our families are suffering. We are unable to pay school fee of our children," he said. "If our demands are not met, we will be forced to go on an indefinite strike," he said.
