PM Modi praises results of farming, poultry rearing projects in Lakshadweep

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the results of two farming projects -- vegetable growing and poultry rearing, launched in the island archipelago under the 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' initiative, saying it shows enthusiasm of the Lakshadweep people about learning and adopting new things. The PM conveyed his praise on Twitter in response to a tweet by Praful K Patel, Administrator of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, about the successful outcome of the 'Nutri Garden Project' which was started in the islands in 2022. "In Lakshadweep, the 'Nutri Garden Project' was launched as a result of the development objective of atma nirbhar bharat. In which 1,000 farmers were provided with vegetable seeds. As a successful result of this programme, the supply of vegetables in the region has increased.@PMOIndia," Patel had tweeted on Saturday. MP Mohammed Faizal disqualified; Lok Sabha Secretariat issues notification

: The Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued notification disqualifying Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal, who was recently convicted in an attempt to murder case by a court in the union territory. As per the notification issued on Friday, Faizal stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from January 11, the date of his conviction by a sessions court in Kavaratti. The decision was taken under the provisions of Article 102 (l) (e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Lakshadweep bars entry into 17 uninhabited isles citing security concerns

The Lakshadweep administration has prohibited entry into 17 of the total 36 islands citing national security and public safety concerns. The 17 are uninhabited isles of the Union Territory and permission for the entry from the sub-divisional magistrate is required. The District Magistrate (DM) of Lakshadweep issued a proclamation under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in this regard. The decision on the proclamation was taken on Wednesday to prevent terrorist or smuggling activities on the uninhabited islands which have temporary structures as houses of labourers who harvest coconuts. The administration said there could be people among them involving in illegal, anti-social and anti-national activities, hence the decision. Lakshadweep bans transport of frozen chicken over Kerala bird flu outbreak

The Lakshadweep administration has for now banned transportation of frozen chicken to the islands from the mainland due to reported outbreak of bird flu in Kerala. The Animal Husbandry department of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep took a decision to this effect on Friday. In its communication to the Director of Port, Shipping and Aviation at Kavaratti, the department has said, "The outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu), a highly contagious zoonotic disease, has been reported in the neighbouring state of Kerala. "Hence, it is decided to ban the transportation of frozen chicken from the mainland to the Lakshadweep Islands." The department requested that concerned officers be instructed to ensure that frozen chicken is not loaded onto ships or barges from the mainland to the islands.

Lakshadweep has become first among the Union Territories and the states to have achieved the feat of vaccinating all those eligible in the age group of 15 to 18 years in a short span of time. In a statement, the administration said all those eligible in the 15-18 age group in the islands were vaccinated within a week after the launch of the vaccination drive. Administrator Praful K Patel had launched the vaccination drive on January 3 in Kavaratti as part of the nationwide campaign. "It is remarkable that the target of 3,492 children was achieved within a week after the launch of vaccination drives through various awareness campaigns conducted in schools and mobilisation drives in all the 10 inhabited islands of Lakshadweep," the administration said.
