48 dead, 31 missing in Nepal after landslide, heavy floods in last 48 hours

Landslides and floods triggered by heavy rain across Nepal have left 48 people dead and 31 missing in the last 48 hours and the army and police have been deployed for rescue and relief operations, officials said on Wednesday. Ilam, an eastern Nepal district, recorded the highest number of deaths at 11 followed by Doti where 9 people were killed, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to Home Ministry spokesperson, Phanindra Mani Pokharel, six persons each died in Humla, Dhankuta and Panchthar due to landslides. Four persons lost their lives in Baitadi, one each in Kalikot, Dadeldhura, Pyuthan and Udayapur and two in Sunsari, according to the Home Ministry official. A total of 23 people have gone missing in Bajhang while one in Doti, two in Pyuthan and five in Ilam. Twenty-three people sustained injuries due to the natural disaster in different districts, according to the ministry. Passengers rescued from vehicle stuck on Badrinath highway amid landslide

Amid a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall, passengers were rescued from a vehicle stuck in Lambagad drain on Badrinath highway on Monday.Efforts are being made by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to retrieve the vehicle, the BRO informed.Debris has blocked Uttarakhand's Rishikesh-Badrinath highway and has damaged dozens of vehicles in Sirobagad. The link road of Khankhra-Khedakhal-Khirsu has also been blocked due to landslides.Landslides were triggered due to incessant rains in the area for the past 4 days.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand. The death toll due to the heavy rains and landslides in Kerala mounted to 21, according to the State's Information and Public Relations Department on Sunday.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the intense spell of rainfall activity over Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is likely to reduce from today.There would be a significant reduction in rainfall in Kerala today as compared to Saturday, said Indian Meteorological Department senior scientist Naresh Kumar on Sunday."There is going to be rainfall of a maximum of 6-7 cm today as compared to the 29 cm of rainfall recorded Saturday. The death toll from heavy rains and catastrophic landslide in Kerala rose to eight on Sunday with hard-hit areas of Kottayam and Idukki districts reeling from the devastation. The Army, NDRF, police and the Fire Force along with the locals began rescue operations on Sunday morning at Koottickal and Kokkayar panchayats where over a dozen people are listed to be missing due to numerous landslides accompanied by heavy downpour since Saturday.
