Three persons were arrested today on charge of duping a person over Rs 11 lakh in New Town satellite township area, for securing admission of his son to a medical college, police said. The three, identified as Ranjan Panda, Sanjay Das and Rajesh Das, were arrested from an apartment in the area, Electronic Complex Police station sources said. The arrests were made following complaints lodged by one Nabin Chandra at the Electronic Complex police station that the accused had taken Rs 11,32,000 from him with a false promise to get his son admitted to a medical college in Bengaluru but the promise turned out to be a false one.

A case has been registered against BJP's Lok Sabha lawmaker Shobha Karandlaje for "provocative" tweets she posted in the social media over an alleged attack on a minor girl in Karnataka's Honnavar, police said on Saturday.
The Hyderabad Police have filed a charge sheet in a local court against three persons who allegedly attempted to join the Islamic State terror group in 2015. The charge sheet was filed in a local court but "it has not yet been numbered" (for further proceedings before the court)," Deputy Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty said today. The three men, in their 20s, were arrested at the Nagpur airport after a long surveillance of their activities in 2015 when they allegedly tried to head for the Middle-East to join the ISIS via Srinagar. They face charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code, among other laws. The trio are currently on bail, police sources said.
Police today launched a massive crackdown on illegal money lending rackets in Kerala, raiding 360 places in four districts and arresting 26 persons allegedly involved in the business. Police conducted the raids, codenamed 'Operation Blade', in Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki and Alappuzha districts which come under the jurisdiction of Ernakulam Range Inspector General of Police. Secret investigations had revealed flourishing of such businesses in these districts and poor people were their easy targets, police said. Cash, gold, signed blank cheques and property documents were seized during the raids carried out in Kochi city, rural areas in Ernakulam district and the other districts, they said. With the conviction of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others in a fodder scam case, 21 years after it had surfaced, an IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, who had probed the case, said the matter has reached a logical conclusion. Varun Sindhu Kul Kaumudi, who was on deputation to his home state Bihar at that time, had closely supervised the case as CBI SP of Animal Husbandry Scam Unit, Patna and had also filed the charge sheet in the case. Recalling the more than two decades-old case, Kaumudi said, "A truckload copies of documents was submitted to the special CBI court in Patna for providing to the accused within the time-frame fixed by the Supreme Court." Kaumudi, a 1986-batch IPS officer, handled the the fodder scam probe before he was transferred back to Andhra Pradesh in 1998. Police arrested two persons from Ramgarh and Chatra districts and seized nine kilogramme of opium worth Rs 18 lakh from them, a senior police officer said today. A special team arrested the two persons from Ramgarh and Chatra district of Jharkhand and seized the opium, he said. Police also seized Rs 1,68,400 in cash from their possession, the sources said.

A customs official has gone missing under mysterious circumstances here, police said today. The man's brother, Nitin, lodged a missing person's report today at the Dadri police station, they said. His brother said that the official, a resident of Luharli village, had gone to office at Noida Phase 2 on December 20, the police said. The official's brother said that he came in the evening at 6 pm and changed clothes and then went out. Since then he has not returned home, they said.
Two trial court judges have been suspended by the Delhi High Court for alleged corruption. The decision to suspend the two additional sessions judges, posted at Dwarka District Court, was taken by a full court of the high court on December 21, Registrar General (RG) Dinesh Kumar Sharma said today. Both the judges did not respond to repeated messages and phone calls by PTI. The registrar general said that one of them was presiding as an additional district judge (Motor Accident Claims Tribunal) and the other was a special judge (electricity). The high court's decision was then communicated to the district judge of Dwarka Court, where the two officers were posted, for necessary action, the RG told PTI. A 23-year-old woman died here today after allegedly setting herself on fire following a heated argument with a man she was in a relationship with in Mansa district of Punjab, a police official said. The incident occurred at Tamkot village here, where the woman, resident of Baghwala area, allegedly set herself afire yesterday after an argument with Satnam Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mansa) Karanveer Singh said over phone. "She sustained 80 per cent burn injuries," Karanveer Singh said, adding that she died while undergoing treatment at a civil hospital here. A case under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment of suicide) was registered against Satnam, the DSP said. The accused was absconding, he added.

A police official posted in Bahadur police station was today found hanging from a wireless tower here. Assistant Sub-Inspector Satish Raghuwanshi (55) was in uniform when his body was discovered in the morning hanging from a tower situated between Kotwali and Dehat (rural) police stations, said officials. Ashoknagar Collector BS Jamod said that prima facie it looked like a case of suicide though the actual cause would be known only after a detailed probe. Family members of Raghuwanshi however alleged that he was killed by the police who then hung his body from the tower. Raghuwanshi's family further alleged that the Superintendent of Police of Ashoknagar after reaching the spot had taken out Raghuwanshi's mobile and some papers. Three suspected drug peddlers were today arrested and 20 kg of ganja was seized from them here, a police spokesperson said. The trio were moving under suspicious circumstances at rail head pull near Trikuta Nagar when they were intercepted by a police patrolling party, the spokesperson said. A Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Saturday has charged the driver accused of deliberately mowing down pedestrians in Melbourne with 18 counts of attempted murder.The accused, Saeed Noori, had appeared in the court today afternoon and did not apply for bail after the verdict was announced, ABC news said.He is also facing one count of conduct for endangering the life of pedestrians for his rash driving.However, the court was informed that the motivation for the attack remained under investigation and further charges were being considered.Noori is expected to appear before the court again on December 27.At least 15 people were injured after a white SUV car mowed down a number of people at a busy intersection of Flinders and Elizabeth streets in the city's Central Business District (CBD) on December 21.The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.According to the police, the car was not travelling at high speed when it crashed.

A court here today sentenced four men to life imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old woman near the Habibganj railway station in the city in October. The sentence was awarded within 52 days of the incident. Additional District and Sessions Judge Savita Dubey held Golu alias Bihari Chadhar (25), Amar alias Ghuntu (24), Rajesh Chetram alias Raju (26) and Ramesh Mehra alias Raju (45) guilty of raping the woman near the railway station when she was returning home after attending a coaching class on October 31. "They will remain behind bars for the rest of their lives," the court said. The four men were convicted under IPC sections pertaining to attempt to murder, gangrape, voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, wrongful restraint and other relevant sections, additional public prosecutor Reena Verma told reporters.
