A Russian-born German man who launched a shrapnel bomb attack on the team bus of football club Borussia Dortmund last year, wounding two people, faces his verdict and sentence Tuesday. Sergej Wenergold, 29, had hoped to profit financially from the attack by betting on an anticipated plunge in the club's stock market value, say prosecutors. The court in the western city of Dortmund will have to decide whether he is guilty of 28 counts of attempted murder, which would carry a maximum term of life in prison. A court here Monday granted 90-day extension to the Pune police for filing a supplementary charge sheet against left-wing activists Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferriera, Sudha Bharadwaj and Varavara Rao in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case. The four, and another activist Gautam Navlakha, accused of having Maoist links, were arrested on August 28 following multi-state raids by the Pune Police. However, on the directions of the Supreme Court, all the five were put under house arrest in their respective cities. In a joint-crackdown by the Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi police, two men were nabbed from Meerut on Monday, following an exchange of fire that left one of the arrested injured, police said. The accused -- Sameer and Furqaan -- were carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh each on charges of robbery, theft and attack upon police party, the police said. A man was found hanging while the body of a woman was found at a house in South Delhi's Chhatarpur on Monday, police said. A call was received from a woman that the door of her flat in Suman colony, Chhatarpur Extension, is locked from inside and not being opened, they added. A team of the Mehrauli police station reached the spot. The front door of the first-floor flat was broke open and it was found that one woman was lying in the inside room with blood oozing from the throat and a man was found hanging from the ceiling fan, said Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (south). Two alleged members of the notorious Kaushal gang, involved in firing at a hospital in Rewari has been arrested, Gurgaon police said Monday. "The accused, Saurav and Gaurav, who are brothers, were involved in various cases of extortion in Rewari and other districts of Haryana. They had also fired gunshots at a hospital in Rewari in a bit to extort money," Deputy Superintendent of Police (STF) Kaptan Singh said. Acting on a tip-off police laid a trap and arrested the accused from Jamalpur village in Gurgaon on Sunday, the officer said, adding they were active members of the Kaushal gang. "The leader of the gang, Kaushal, used to make calls to businessmen to extort money and the accused used to collect the amount from the victims on his behalf," Singh said.
The police arrested three persons early on Monday for allegedly trying to drag a woman out of her home and assaulting her family members. Police said the main accused, 43-year-old Basudeb Mondal, had been forcing the woman to get into a relationship with him for the past six months. Mondal and his accomplices also beat up policemen who had gone there after being informed about the incident. CBI Director (in-charge) M Nageswar Rao has "turned down" a proposal conveyed "orally" by the then director Alok Verma to re-open a case of alleged corruption against Income Tax officers and a middleman, saying it was a policy decision which he could not take in light of a Supreme Court order. A CBI spokesperson said the file was moved before the interim director but the request for reopening the case was turned down as giving an approval to it would have amounted to taking a policy decision which would have been against the guidelines of the court. In 2016, the CBI had registered a case against nine senior Income Tax officials and three private persons, including Chartered Accountant Sanjay Bhandari, for allegedly indulging in corrupt practices. A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangulating a minor girl after her parents objected to his "indecent acts" with his live-in partner in the neighbourhood in northwest Delhi's Swaroop Nagar, police said Monday. The Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court on Monday saw Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad recall the "days of stress during Emergency" which was declared by the Indira Gandhi government for 21 months from 1975. Prasad paid tribute to Justice H R Khanna, the lone dissenting judge in the five-member Constitution Bench which had held that even the right to life and liberty can be suspended. Though the apex court delivered such judgement, it never became a precedent or referred in any of the judgements, and was later overruled. The Law Minister said Justice Khanna gave the dissenting verdict knowing that he would suffer for that, and was denied the office of the Chief Justice of India.
