The Union Budget 2025-26 has allocated Rs 3,481.27 crore for security-related expenditure (SRE) and the Special Infrastructure Scheme for Left Wing Extremist (LWE) areas as the BJP-led Centre has set a target of March 2026 to end the Maoists menace in the country. The number of deaths of civilians and security forces in Left Wing Extremism-related incidents came down by 86 per cent from an all-time high of 1,005 in 2010 to 138 in 2,023, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday. Replying to a question, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, said that in 2024 up to November 15, a sharp reduction of 25 per cent was witnessed in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) perpetrated incidents as compared to the corresponding period of 2023. The government's sustained campaign against Left Wing Extremism (LWE) has led to the menace being restricted to 43 districts as against 200 before 2014, sources said on Sunday. Twelve Naxalites including a couple who were carrying a reward of Rs 6 lakh on their heads surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Saturday, police said. The incidents of Naxal violence have reduced by 77 per cent from the high of 2,213 in 2010 to 509 in 2021, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Similarly, resultant deaths (civilians and security forces) have reduced by 85 per cent from the high of 1,005 in 2010 to 147 in 2021, Rai said, adding that the declining trend continues in 2022. "Steadfast implementation of the national policy has resulted in consistent decline in violence in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas. Incidents of LWE violence have reduced by 77 pert cent from the high of 2,213 in 2010 to 509 in 2021," he said replying to a written question.
