Lionel Messi checked into the match early in the second half, the score tied and Inter Miami's chances at breaking a pair of Major League Soccer regular-season records very much uncertain. In that instant, it all changed. Messi had three goals his first MLS hat trick and an assist in the span of about 30 minutes, Luis Suarez scored twice and Inter Miami rolled past New England 6-2 on Saturday night to set MLS records for most points and best winning percentage. Inter Miami finished with 74 points, one more than New England had in its record-setting season in 2021. Best player ever. Best MLS record ever. A perfect match. This night is yours, Inter Miami primary owner Jorge Mas said after the match, as the team celebrated the Supporters' Shield which it won earlier this month on the road at Columbus in a ceremony for the home fans. The best fans on the face of the Earth. The party was going to happen either way. Messi just made it even more special. At 22-4-8 in league play, In
Veteran striker Luis Surez announced his retirement from Uruguay's national team at the age of 37. The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward, Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 matches, will play his last international game on Friday against Paraguay. "It hurts to say it, but Friday will be my last match with my country's national team," a tearful Surez said in a press conference at the Centenario Stadium on Monday. Uruguay hosts Paraguay in a World Cup qualifying match that day. Surez, who has played for Uruguay since 2007, said he believes it's the right time to retire. "I know that it is difficult for me to get to the next World Cup. Being retired by myself and not by injuries is very comforting," he said. Surez was in Uruguay's squad in four World Cups and five Copa America tournaments. He won the continental tournament 2011. The striker plays at Inter Miami with his close friend Lionel Messi and plans to continue his career at club level. The two played
Lionel Messi returned to group training with Inter Miami on Wednesday, more than six weeks after the Argentina captain left the Copa America final with a badly sprained right ankle. There is still no official timetable for when Messi, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, will play again for Inter Miami which has the best record in Major League Soccer so far this season. Inter Miami visits Chicago on Saturday, then doesn't return to MLS play until a Sept. 14 match with Philadelphia. If Messi doesn't play this weekend, that means he'd have two more weeks to continue rehabbing before returning to game action. Messi was not selected by Argentina to play in World Cup qualifiers in early September. To see him on the field is great, Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender said after the Wednesday workout. I know he's been getting treatment every single day, training every single day. He's dealt with things before. He's been there, done that and he's still doing it at the highest level. To se
Luis Surez scored 30 seconds into the match and again in the sixth minute and that was all goalkeeper Drake Callender needed as Inter Miami beat FC Cincinnati 2-0 on Saturday night to become the first team this season to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Inter Miami (17-4-5) avenged a 6-1 drubbing in Cincinnati earlier this season and moved eight points ahead of second-place Cincinnati (15-8-3) in the Eastern Conference and in the Supporters' Shield race. Rookie defender Marcelo Weigandt picked up his first career assist and fellow rookie defender Yaniick Bright notched his second just 30 seconds into the match as Inter Miami grabbed the lead. Surez netted his 15th goal in his 15th start and 19th appearance in his first season with the club when he used rookie midfielder Matas Rojas' third assist to make it 2-0. Inter Miami was forced to play a man down from the 42nd on after defender Toms Avils was tagged with his second yellow card. It did not matter in the end. Callender turned aw
There they all were, sitting next to each other on a couple of benches in their practice attire, all of them smiling. Lionel Messi was sipping on a drink at one end, Luis Surez next to him, then Sergio Busquets, then Jordi Alba on the other end. This wasn't Barcelona in 2014. This was Inter Miami on Saturday. It's official: Messi, Busquets, Alba and Surez are together again, this time in Major League Soccer. Preseason training for Inter Miami officially opened Saturday, with Surez being seen in his new colors for the first time after signing a one-year deal last month to join the trio of his former teammates who arrived last summer. To come help a team that has well-known players that everyone knows and (adjust) to the other players and what is a new club and do what the club wants which is to attempt to win an MLS Cup and do it with professionalism is what is wanted of me, Surez said. Surez and Messi spent six seasons together at Barcelona, winning four Spanish league titles a
