The Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar has claimed the Narendra Modi government bestowed the Bharat Ratna on eminent agricultural scientist late Dr MS Swaminathan to divert attention from its anti-farmer stance. One of the main demands of the farm outfits protesting currently is the implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism based on the formula of Swaminathan but the Centre was unwilling to implement it, NCP's Sharad Pawar faction national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said on Sunday. "It is more than two weeks since the current farmers' protest started. The farmers have been stopped by the government from entering Delhi and placing their demands. They protested in 2020-21 too and after many lives were lost, the government took back the three farm laws as demanded by the farmers," Crasto said in a statement. Leaders cutting across party lines welcomed the announcement of Bharat Ratna for P V Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh and M S Swaminathan on Friday and said they deserved the honour. Asked about the announcement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, "I see it positively. The truth is that they should have been honoured long ago but, for the first time, a government has thought about it." He said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) always rises above party politics while taking such decisions. BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also welcomed the announcement. "I thank the prime minister. The awards have been given to people who have contributed to the country's development," he said. Congress leader Rajeev Shukla, however, said the BJP-led Centre is honouring former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, while it has also brought a "white paper" on the economy during the government of Manmohan Singh, who was the finance minister under Rao.

Honouring the late MS Swaminathan, Thanjavur-based The Agricultural College and Research Institute will be renamed after the iconic scientist, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced on Wednesday. Further, an award will be instituted in Swaminathan's name to honour toppers in plant propagation and genetics in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Making a statement in the state Assembly, the CM said the Thanjavur institute, located at Echankottai there will be renamed as Dr MS Swaminathan Agricultural College and Research Institute. Stalin said he was making the announcement to honour Swaminathan, recipient of a number of national and international recognitions including Padma Vibushan and Magsasay Award. Stalin recalled Swaminathan's contributions to the country's green revolution in the 1960s and heaped praises on the late scientist for his work. Eminent farm scientist M S Swaminathan was cremated here on Saturday with government honours, marked by a police gun salute. A platoon of police personnel in ceremonial attire gave a gun salute and bugle was played marking the Tamil Nadu government's honour at a crematory here. The final rites were performed by the family members and the body was cremated at the Besant Nagar electric crematorium. Swaminathan passed away here on Thursday. He was 98.
