The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has recommended the inclusion of several communities from Maharashtra into the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). In an advisory to the government issued on Wednesday, the NCBC proposed adding communities such as Lodh, Lodha, Lodhi; Badgujar; Suryavanshi Gujar; Leve Gujar, Reve Gujar, Reva Gujar; Dangari; Bhoyar, Pawar; and Kapewar, among others. The decision followed hearings held by the NCBC's two-member bench, comprising chairperson Hansraj Gangaram Ahir and member Bhuvan Bhushan Kamal, a statement said. These hearings took place in Mumbai on October 17, 2023, and July 26, 2024. After thorough deliberations, the commission submitted its advice to the Union government on October 8, 2024, for the inclusion of these castes under the OBC category for Maharashtra, it said. A portion of a three-storey residential building, a property of the Maharashtra government's housing agency MHADA, collapsed in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. No one was injured in the incident after which the building, which consisted of 30 rooms and eight shops, was vacated, they said. The slab and plaster from the first floor of the building, 'Karim', located in central Mumbai's Madanpura locality, fell at around 12.45 pm, a civic official said, citing information received from the Fire Brigade. "There was no report of injury to anyone," the official said. He said the building was a property of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). Another civic official said emergency response teams, including the Fire Brigade, police, civic undertaking BEST, ward staff and an ambulance, were immediately mobilized to the site. MHADA officials also visited the spot.

Servotech Power Systems on Monday said it has secured an additional order in Maharashtra to set up nine EV charging stations. With this, the total number of EV charging stations set up by the company will reach 29. The additional orders have been secured from Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), the company said in a statement. "Previously, the company had received an order from NMC which involved supplying, commissioning, and constructing 20 EV charging stations throughout the corporation area," it said. This order will meet the growing need for convenient electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and ensure consumers a clean energy supply for intercity and interstate travel, Sarika Bhatia, Director of Servotech Power Systems, said. The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) on Monday invited bids from eligible Indian and Japanese companies for the design, supply and construction of tracks for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project in Maharashtra. NHSRCL, in a release, said the bullet train track in Maharashtra will be 314 km long as the route alignment is 157 km between the train station at Bandra Kurla Complex and Zaroli village on the state's border with Gujarat. The tender is for the design, supply and construction of tracks and track-related works, including testing and commissioning for the double-line high-speed railway, it said. Technical bids are scheduled to be opened on February 3, 2025. "This will be the last track construction contract for the bullet train project," the release stated, adding that it will also include track works for four stations and a rolling stock depot in Thane. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that by 2030, Maharashtra will become the first state in the country to produce 50 per cent of its energy requirements from non-traditional power sources. Nearly 50 female students of a government college were hospitalised for suspected food poisoning after having dinner at their hostel in Maharashtra's Latur city, officials said on Sunday. The hostel, part of the Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic, has 324 female students. At around 7 pm on Saturday, the students had dinner, consisting of rice, chapattis, 'okra' curry and lentil soup, the officials said. By 8.30 pm, several of them felt nauseous and some of the students started vomiting, they said. Upon receiving the information, the college principal rushed to the spot and informed Dr Uday Mohite, dean of the Vilasrao Deshmukh Government Medical College and Hospital in Latur. The affected students were immediately taken to the hospital in ambulances. Nearly 50 students were admitted to the hospital for treatment by midnight, Dr Mohite told PTI. Infrastructure company MEIL on Saturday said it has commissioned five solar plants in Maharashtra having a combined capacity of 19 megawatt (MW). The plants were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) said in a statement.
