Death toll from heavy flooding in Malaysia climbs to 41; 8 still missing

The death toll from heavy seasonal floods in Malaysia has risen to 41, with eight people still missing, the police said on Friday.It was previously reported that 27 people were killed in the floods. At present, there are 26 men, 13 women and two children killed in the floods."Of the 41 deaths, 25 were reported in Selangor, 15 in Pahang and one man in Kelantan," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said, as quoted by The Star newspaper.The Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rains and thunder storms in the coastal states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan on Saturday.Flooding is common in Malaysia during the rainy season, but it turned disastrous after torrential rains hit the country's east on December 17 and continued until December 19. The heavy rains stopped on Monday and the flood waters began to recede, buy they are still up to 5 feet high in many regions of the country.

Malaysia bans entry of travellers from eight countries over Omicron fears

Malaysia has imposed travel restrictions on travellers from eight countries in a bid to stop the new Omicron variant from spreading to the country, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said on Wednesday.The countries affected are South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, with non-citizens from these countries being barred from entering Malaysia, he told a press conference.The restriction will also apply to migrant workers as well as international students from the affected countries.The minister said the list would be updated regularly and countries added or removed as needed.He said that while Malaysian citizens, permanent residents and long-term passholders were not barred, they would be required to undergo a 14-day quarantine on arrival.Khairy also said plans to introduce vaccinated travel lanes with countries afflicted with Omicron would be put on hold.The Omicron variant was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by South ...

Indian Super League club Odisha FC on Monday announced that it has reached an agreement with Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta'zim FC over a loan deal of midfielder Liridon Krasniqi.
