The bill, which aims to implement the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, is scheduled to be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal today
Congress leader Manish Tewari has favoured the regulation of Indian intelligence agencies through parliamentary oversight, remarks that come in the backdrop of the recent allegations emanating from the US and Canada. The Lok Sabha MP from Chandigarh has already submitted a private bill in this regard and also called for a National Intelligence Tribunal to investigate complaints against these agencies. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police went public this week with allegations that Indian diplomats were targeting Sikh separatists in Canada by sharing information about them with their government back home. The relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations in September last year of the "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India, in Canada. India has rejected the charges as absurd and denied any involvement of its ...
Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari has asserted that every Leader of Opposition is a "Prime Minister in-waiting", as he hailed Rahul Gandhi for raising issues of the people and providing the "healing touch" to places such as Manipur. Gandhi became the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha in late June after the Lok Sabha poll results in which the BJP fell short of a majority but got the mandate along with its NDA allies. Asked about Gandhi taking on the mantle of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and whether he was being looked upon as a future prime minister, Tewari said, "Every Leader of Opposition is a Prime Minister in-waiting..." "As far as Mr Gandhi is concerned, his speeches have been very well received across the length and breadth of the country. He has articulated issues which are close to the hearts and minds of the people and that is having a resonance across the country," Tewari said during his interaction with PTI editors at the news agency's headquarters ...
The 2024 Lok Sabha election results were not so much about the numbers but about giving India a chance to "breathe" and for its institutions to start functioning again, says senior Congress leader Manish Tewari. In an interaction with PTI editors at the news agency's headquarters here, the former Union minister also asserted that the BJP may acknowledge it or not but the government's recent "U-turns" on certain issues are reflective of the realities of coalition politics. Tewari said he believes India requires a "second wave of democratic reforms" whereby structures which really underpin the democratic edifice of India need to be more participatory, inclusive and democratic. The Congress Working Committee permanent invitee also exuded confidence that his party and its allies were headed for a victory in the upcoming assembly polls which would have a positive impact on national politics. Asked about the scenario post Lok Sabha poll results, Tewari said, "You need to roll back to ...
The Congress on Saturday fielded two-time MP from Punjab Manish Tewari as its candidate from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat. Veteran party leader and former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal was also in the reckoning for the seat. Tewari's candidature, along with 15 other candidates, was announced during a meeting of the Congress' central election committee in Delhi. A sitting MP from the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab, Tewari is a former union minister. He was elected as MP from Ludhiana in 2009. The names of Tewari, Bansal and Chandigarh Congress president Harmohinder Singh Lucky were doing rounds for candidature from the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency, currently held by BJP MP Kirron Kher. Tewari will face BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon in the electoral contest. The BJP on Wednesday named Tandon, the former Chandigarh BJP president, as its candidate, replacing incumbent MP Kher. Tewari won the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from the Anandpur Sahib seat, defeating Shiromani Akal

Opposition parties on Wednesday attacked Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks against India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, with Congress leaders saying nobody has the right to insult those who fought against British Rule and offered everything to support the freedom struggle. BJP leaders, however, asserted that whatever Shah said in the Lok Sabha about Nehru is correct, and history has to be told. Shah on Wednesday blamed Nehru's "two major blunders" -- declaring a ceasefire without winning entire Kashmir and taking the issue to the United Nations -- for the sufferings of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The home minister trained his guns at Nehru while replying to a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill. Reacting to Shah's remarks, Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh wrote on X, "Today in the Lok Sabha, the home minister made deliberately provocat
