The top court was hearing a petition filed by AAP leader Shelly Oberoi in connection with the election of mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)
The AAP councillors also protested and raised slogans against the aldermen being allowed to vote for the mayoral election
The municipal House witnessed an uproar on Monday after Presiding Officer Satya Sharma announced that the nominated members will also be allowed to vote in the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and Standing Committee members. Soon after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House assembled around 11:30 am, after a delay of half an hour, she announced that elections to the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and Standing Committee members would be held simultaneously. "Aldermen will be allowed to vote in the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and Standing Committee members," Sharma said. The announcement drew protests from AAP councillors. Party leader Mukesh Goel said aldermen can't vote. To this, Sharma said, "People have sent you here to serve them, let the election be held." Following this, the House was adjourned briefly. This is the third session of the House after the December 4 municipal polls. The first two sessions -- held on January 6 and January 24 -- were adjourned by the
The Aam Aadmi Party Friday alleged that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) budget was passed by the civic body without keeping the ruling party in the loop. No reaction to the allegation was immediately available from the civic body officials. AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed that they learnt through newspaper reports that the budget had been passed by the MCD and since this was the objective, the elections of the mayor and deputy mayor were deliberately delayed. "It is a dangerous trend. The AAP, which came to power in the MCD, was not informed that the budget has been passed by the officers. This is wrongdoing," he claimed. The AAP won 134 wards in the MCD polls in December while the BJP won 104 wards. "The AAP has always kept the promises made in its manifesto. The budget is prepared by them and the job will be ours to work according to it. This is wrong," Bhardwaj said. The mayoral election is the first item on the agenda for the municipal House slated to
The Aam Aadmi Party held ''padayatras'' in all the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi on Saturday to protest against the BJP for allegedly indulging in "hooliganism" and conspiring to stop the MCD mayor election twice. AAP MLA and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak said, "The BJP seeks to maintain control over all aspects of Delhi. Troubled by the BJP's mismanagement of the MCD for 15 years, the people of Delhi have now given a majority to the AAP. "However, the BJP remains unable to accept this outcome and is determined to keep the MCD under their control at any cost. This is the reason why, despite the results of the MCD elections having been announced over a month ago, the BJP continues to obstruct the formation of an AAP government and the appointment of an AAP mayor." He said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House has been called twice for the mayor's election, but the BJP continues to obstruct the process by "creating chaos and resorting to hooliganism". "The AAP will not tolera
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged on Saturday that doctors' salaries and government projects were unlawfully stalled in order to influence the MCD polls, but asserted that these actions will not obstruct the public welfare work of the Arvind Kejriwal-led dispensation. Sisodia inaugurated a new casualty and emergency and labour room in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology in the MCH (maternity and child health) block, along with upgraded oxygen facilities, at the state-run Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital here. "The Delhi government's health department has been working round the clock to ensure that the people of the national capital get the best of world-class health facilities at the hospitals run by the city government, which is a priority of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Delhi's health model has received acclamation the world over. Upgrading our hospitals is just another effort to make our health model more efficient and sustainable," the Aam Aadmi Party
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to list for hearing on February 3 a plea of Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi seeking directions to ensure mayoral election in Delhi in a time-bound manner. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud took note of the submissions of the lawyer on early holding of the mayoral poll for MCD. It will be listed on February 3, the CJI said. The mayoral election in the national capital was stalled on Tuesday last for the second time this month as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was adjourned indefinitely by the lieutenant governor-appointed presiding officer, following a ruckus created by some councillors.
Underlining that the MCD is being run without a Mayor for the last eight months, the AAP government sent a proposal to the L-G for holding the Mayoral election on January 18, 20, 21 or 24

The corruption issue raised by the BJP against the Arvind Kejriwal government had an impact in the MCD polls and the effect will magnify in two to three years when the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls are held, the party's Delhi unit working president Virendra Sachdeva claimed Wednesday. "(Prime Minister) Narendra Modi is the leader of everyone in the BJP and the rest of us are just workers," he said, adding the party's vote share will be boosted by increasing awareness among people about various benefits Delhi has received from the Central government's initiatives. Under Modi's leadership, BJP leaders and workers will work towards ensuring that the party wins all seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi and better its 52 per cent vote share of the last Lok Sabha polls in the next general elections, Sachdeva told reporters. Sachdeva took over as working president of the Delhi BJP last Sunday after Adesh Gupta stepped down following the party's defeat in the Municipal Corporation of .
Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta resigned on Sunday, days after the party's defeat in the municipal corporation polls to the Aam Aadmi Party. The BJP's Delhi unit vice president Virendra Sachdeva has been appointed acting president. The Aam Aadmi Party ended the BJP's 15-year-rule in the Municipal of Delhi (MCD) poll in results announced on Wednesday. The AAP won the elections with 134 seats, while the BJP bagged 104. "The resignation of Adesh Gupta as Delhi BJP president has been accepted as per the direction of BJP national president Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda. Delhi unit vice president Virendra Sachdeva is being appointed working state unit chief till the next order," the BJP's national general secretary Arun Singh said in a communication. The demand for an organisational overhaul in the Delhi BJP had begun immediately after the party's loss in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. Amid the clamour for change, Gupta had in a meeting on the result day, asserted he was

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said the "heavy BJP machinery" deployed during campaigning made the MCD polls the toughest election contested by the Aam Aadmi Party so far, accusing the saffron party of pressuring media to spread propaganda. Addressing the newly elected councillors, Kejriwal asserted that the AAP does positive politics and talks about "our work" "This election was very very tough. A few people say it was an easy election, but it was not. The way they conspired against us and the way they used state machinery against us, it was the toughest elections we ever contested," Kejriwal claimed. "Heavy BJP machinery deployed during campaigning made MCD poll the toughest election contested by the AAP so far," he added. Referring to the purported videos of jailed minister Satyender Jain, the chief minister said the BJP pressured the media to spread "propaganda against us". "We do positive politics and talk about our work. The BJP through fake videos and lett
The Section 35 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act mandates that the civic body must elect a mayor at its first meeting of each financial year
The AAP will decide on the probables for the mayor's post after the Delhi LG gives a date for the house to be convened, a party functionary said on Friday. The MCD will be approaching Delhi LG VK Saxena to seek a date on which the Municipal House can be convened so that the councillors can take oath, and a mayor can be selected. "Nearly 55 per cent of our women candidates registered wins in the MCD polls and since the first mayor will be a woman, we have plenty of choices. We are waiting for a date to be given by the LG and then we will decide on the person for the post," the functionary said. In a related development, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta said the MCD mayor will be from the AAP and the BJP will play the role of a "strong opposition", ending speculation over the saffron party staking a claim on the mayor's post despite losing the civic polls. The AAP got a shot in the arm after two Congress councillors joined it on Friday taking the total number of council to 136. There is n
The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday said it was confident that its councillor would be elected as the next mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi since the numbers were "on their side". Sources in the party said they were also keeping a keen eye on the BJP. This comes after senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday alleged that the BJP had made attempts to poach its newly elected councilors. The AAP on Wednesday wrested power from the BJP in the high-stakes civic polls in the national capital, even as some leaders of the saffron party claimed that its member could be elected to the top post. The municipal polls were held on December 4 and the AAP bagged 134 of the 250 wards, emerging as a clear winner. Amid all this, the party even had plans to take its councillors to Punjab to ensure that they are not "poached" by the BJP but the plan was cancelled, sources claimed. The MCD will be approaching Delhi LG VK Saxena to seek a date on which the Municipal House can be convened so
MCD Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti on Thursday presented the civic body's budget to the civic body's Special Officer, official sources said. The annual budget has to be presented by a commissioner before December 10, as per statutory requirements. The budget is eventually approved by the Leader of House in a special meeting of the House chaired by the mayor, they said. While the results of the high-stakes December 4 civic polls were announced on Wednesday, the new House is yet to be convened, and thus the city is yet to get its new mayor after the election. The civic body in Delhi had 272 wards across its three corporations -- NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC, which existed from 2012-2022 - before being reunified into a sole MCD which formally came into existence on May 22 this year. The commissioner presented the MCD budget which includes the revised budget estimate for year 2022-23 and budget estimate for 2023-24, an official source said. Since there is no House currently, the budget was pres
