An India-born media executive who has worked in UK broadcasting for over 40 years, Dr Samir Shah, has been announced as the UK government's preferred candidate to take over as the new BBC chairman. NewsClick Wednesday alleged in the Delhi High Court that investigating agencies were abusing the process of law to subject it to criminal prosecution to create a "chilling effect". The court was hearing petitions by the news portal for quashing the cases the Delhi Police and Enforcement Directorate have registered against it over alleged violation of foreign funding laws. "I am being targeted because I happen to be an entity engaged in news circulation on digital platform," said senior advocate Siddharth Agarwal, representing the petitioner, before Justice Saurabh Banerjee. "We have reached a place where criminal law is used as a weapon of choice for chilling effect. There is nothing here that needs to be investigated," argued the senior lawyer. A Delhi court on Saturday granted the city police time till November 17 to respond to the bail application of NewsClick human resources department head Amit Chakravarty in a case lodged under anti-terror law UAPA over allegations that the news portal received money to spread pro-China propaganda. Special Judge Hardeep Kaur adjourned the matter following a request made by the police. The Special Cell of Delhi Police had arrested Chakravarty along with NewsClick founder and editor in-chief Prabir Purkayastha on October 3. Both are currently in judicial custody. According to the FIR, a large amount of funds to the news portal came from China to "disrupt the sovereignty of India" and cause disaffection against the country. Broadcast major Star India's consolidated net profit declined 30.62 per cent to Rs 1,272.15 crore in the financial year ended on March 31, 2023, showed data accessed by business intelligence platform Tofler. However, its revenue from operation in FY23 increased by 6.15 per cent to Rs 19,856.86 crore. In the preceding financial year (FY22), Star India's net profit was at Rs 1,833.81 crore and its revenue from operation was at Rs 18,704.66 crore. The total income of Star India, which is owned by US-based global media major Walt Disney Company, was at Rs 20,698.64 crore in FY23, up 8.6 per cent year on year. Its total income was Rs 19,058.04 crore in FY22. In FY23, Star India's total expenses were at Rs 18,759.31 crore, up 16.29 per cent year on year. A Delhi court on Wednesday sent NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and human resources department head Amit Chakravarty to police custody till November 2 in a case lodged under the anti-terror law UAPA over allegations that the news portal received money to spread pro-China propaganda. The accused were produced in the court on the expiry of their 15-day judicial custody granted by it earlier. The police had requested the court on October 10 to send the accused persons to jail and had submitted that the agency could ask for their further custodial interrogation later. The police on Wednesday told the judge that it wanted to confront the accused with some protected witnesses and also some devices which were examined and the data that has been extracted. Advocate Arshdeep Singh Khurana, appearing for Purkayastha, opposed the police remand plea claiming that there was no new ground in the application. Network18 Media & Investments Ltd on Wednesday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 111.17 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The company's investments in sports and digital platforms, which are new growth verticals for the company, led to the widening of its loss. It had posted a loss of Rs 28.84 crore during the July-September period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. However, the company's consolidated revenue from operations rose 20.44 per cent to Rs 1,865.50 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal. It also alleged that NewsClick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha conspired with a group -- People's Alliance for Democracy and Secularism (PADS) -- to sabotage the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
