Varanasi court bans media from covering ASI survey of Gyanvapi complex

A Varanasi court on Wednesday barred media from covering the ongoing ASI survey of the Gyanvapi complex from the spot and also directed members of the survey team to not give comments to any media outlet. The court of District Judge A K Vishvesh passed the order on a plea by the Gyanvapi management committee seeking a ban on the media coverage of the survey which is being conducted to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a temple. Madan Mohan Yadav, the Hindu side's lawyer who was present in the court during the hearing, told PTI, "The court has ordered the media to not report the event from the spot. The members of survey team should also not give comments in the media. The court further advised that such reports on the issue that could lead to breach of peace should not be put on social media." In July, a Varanasi court had directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex located next to the .

Media bodies allege 'targeted campaign' by politicians against NewsClick

Several media associations on Wednesday said the accusations levelled by political leaders against NewsClick suggesting that the portal serves as a mouthpiece of a neighbouring country were "unwarranted and condemnable". "While NewsClick, like other media outlets, critically examines government actions, this does not render it unpatriotic or a tool of any foreign nation," a statement by Press Association, Press Club of India, Delhi Union of Journalists and Indian Women Press Corps said. Expressing deep concern over the alleged "targeted campaign", they said if sources of funding of NewsClick were under scrutiny, the same transparency should extend to portals "aligned with the establishment". "It is imperative for the interests of complete transparency that the sponsors and funding sources of all such portals be disclosed. Without such disclosure, the recent actions targeting NewsClick could rightly be characterised as a witch-hunt," the media bodies said. NewsClick is again in the

Boom Live launches teen fact-checking network to address misinformation

Independent fact-checking organisation Boom Live has launched a "first of its kind" fact-checking and media literacy program targeting teenagers in India. Working with MediaWise, the digital media literacy initiative of the Poynter Institute, Boom Live has selected 13 teenagers from over 100 applications to participate in the programme. The final 13 teen fact-checkers will pitch, write and record ten fact-checks covering technology, health and nutrition, education, and finance in English and other Indian languages, which will then be published on Boom's YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin handles. H R Venkatesh, director, training and research, Boom Live said that the network will "address the misinformation challenges that Indian teens face". One, it involves young people who will no doubt influence their peers to pause, think and do some digging before believing whatever they see and hear. Two, they're learning and teaching not just fact-checking but also media literacy, which means

BBC suspends presenter over claims he paid a teenager for explicit photos

The BBC said Sunday that it has suspended a leading presenter who is alleged to have paid a teenager for sexually explicit photos. As senior British politicians urged a rapid investigation, the broadcaster said it was working to establish the facts of a complex and fast-moving set of circumstances. The UK's publicly funded national broadcaster was scrambling to head off a worsening crisis after The Sun newspaper reported allegations that the male presenter gave a youth 35,000 pounds ($45,000) starting in 2020 when the young person was 17. Neither the star nor the youth was identified. Amid speculation on social media about the identity of the presenter, several of the BBC's best-known stars spoke up to say it wasn't them. Though the age of sexual consent in Britain is 16, it's a crime to make or possess indecent images of anyone under 18. The Sun said the young person's mother had complained to the BBC in May but that the presenter had remained on the air. The BBC said in a state

Knowledge is future, media plays important role in transmission: Gadkari

Knowledge is the future and journalists perform the important task of disseminating it, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said here on Friday. Speaking at an award function organized by the Mumbai Patrakar Parishad, he also noted that there are still some journalists who present the truth fearlessly without thinking about how people would react. To convey information about good developments in society and good work done by any person is a very important job and journalists perform this task, the senior BJP leader said. "Knowledge is the future..... If conversion of knowledge into wealth is our future, knowledge must be taken to the people and journalists do this job very well," he said. There are some journalists for whom their job is a mission, Gadkari further said. "Many dangers have to be faced while doing journalism today....One has to pay the price for writing the truth. Because people do not love the truth. But there are many journalists who do not care about reaction but think .

Kerala CPI(M) secy Govindan says his statement on media misinterpreted

Under attack from various quarters for his statement targeting the media, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan on Tuesday made a U turn, claiming that his remarks were misinterpreted and that he did not say the media would face legal action for reporting against the Left government in the state. Accusing the media of adopting the approach of making sheep into dogs, Govindan said here that he was only responding to the "conspiracy" involved in blaming the state secretary of SFI, the student wing of the CPI(M), in connection with a mark list controversy in a government autonomous college in Kochi. A woman journalist of a leading news channel was booked by police in a conspiracy case on SFI leader P M Arsho's complaint. Adopting a hard stand on the matter, Govindan had said that any anti-government or anti-SFI campaign in the name of reporting would invite action. His statement targeting the media was slammed by opposition parties, cultural icons, and the media fraternity in the souther

Media should tell truth without choosing sides: Senior RSS functionary

The media should play "a positive role" and tell the truth without choosing sides in the interest of society and the country, senior RSS functionary Narendra Kumar Thakur said on Monday. Addressing an event here, he also expressed concern over the circulation of "fake news" on social media and said handling of such news has emerged as "a big challenge" before the media. The "biggest victim" of fake news is the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Thakur said, suggesting that journalists should duly verify information that they "pick" from social media before disseminating it. "Circulation of fake news on social media has become a big challenge today... Many such fake news appear, for example, RSS carried out a poll survey. We fail to understand where such information comes from. We have never conducted any poll survey ever," the RSS leader said. The media should refrain from carrying such news in the rush of being the first to report, he said. Thakur, who is the national co-head of

Media is supporting Brij Bhushan more than players: Protesting wrestlers

The protesting wrestlers on Sunday accused the media of helping WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh more than the players, saying the newspersons should not give him the platform to speak. Accused of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, the Wrestling Federation of India chief has vowed to fight against the charges and claimed that the athletes' protest was politically motivated. The Delhi Police has filed two FIRs, including one under the POCSO act, against the BJP MP, who has completed 12 years as WFI president and is ineligible to become an office bearer again. "The media is supporting Brij Bhushan more than the players. You see his criminal records. Does any player, sitting here, or players from other sports, have criminal record?" Bajrang asked during a media interaction. The Tokyo Games bronze medallist sought to convey the message that it's more difficult to win an Olympic medal than becoming a Member of Parliament in this country. US official lauds Indian journalists, says India has a free press

A top US official has lauded the freedom of the press in India and the role of journalists in supporting democracy in the world's most populous country. US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu said that "there is nothing that's kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works." I know the media market is changing. But I have such respect for the freedom of the press in India. There is nothing that's kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works, Lu told PTI here. I can remember going into MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) once and seeing a senior person with files stacked up to the ceiling because he was processing a Right For Information request. And he was complaining bitterly about having to do this and I could only laugh because we have to do the same thing in our bureaucracy where if someone asks for a document, I have to spend several
