The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to eight convicts in the infamous 1987 Hashimpura case involving the massacre of 38 persons by the Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih took note of the submissions of senior advocate Amit Anand Tiwari, appearing for four convicts, that they were suffering prolonged incarceration after the Delhi High Court reversed their acquittal by the trial court in the case. On Friday, senior advocate Tiwari, while representing Sami Ullah, Niranjan Lal, Mahesh Prasad, and Jaipal Singh, argued the appellants had been in jail for over six years since the high court verdict. Three people were killed, two injured and seven feared trapped after a three-storey house collapsed in this Uttar Pradesh district on Saturday, officials said. "Twelve people got buried under the debris after the sudden collapse of the house. Till now, five people have been taken out from the debris. Of them, three died and two injured have been admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College," the relief commissioner's office said. The incident occurred around 5:15 pm and emergency services were immediately alerted, it said. District Magistrate Deepak Meena confirmed the collapse of the three-storey house in Zakir Colony. Officials initially said around six people were trapped under the debris. Senior officials rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue operations. National Disaster Response Force, fire brigade and police teams are working to rescue those trapped under the debris.
The Meerut South RRTS station was opened for passenger operations on Sunday, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) said. With the addition of this eight-km section, 42 km of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is now operational, covering nine stations from Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Meerut South in Meerut, the NCRTC said in a statement. The Namo Bharat trains will operate from 6 am to 10 pm on the entire section from Sahibabad to Meerut South. The first train in both directions will depart at 6 am and the last train will leave the terminal stations Sahibabad and Meerut South at 10 pm, the statement said. The one-way discounted fare for the Namo Bharat trains will be Rs 110 for standard class from Sahibabad to Meerut South and Rs 90 for standard class from Ghaziabad to Meerut South, it stated. The Meerut South RRTS station will feature the largest parking facility in Uttar Pradesh along the RRTS corridor, enhancing passenger convenience, the NCRTC said.
The national capital region transport corporation (NCRTC) has invited bids for exclusive semi-naming and co-branding rights for its five stations on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, a statement said on Friday. The five stations for which the semi-naming/co-branding rights are available are Duhai, Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar South, Modi Nagar North and Meerut South, it said. This initiative aims to enhance passenger experience and convenience while generating Non-Fare Box Revenue to support the operational costs of the RRTS Corridor. Brands awarded these rights will have the opportunity to prefix or suffix their names to station names, incorporate their brand colours on station walls, hoardings and entry/exit points, and utilise both bare and built-up retail spaces, the statement said. The NCRTC will be planting more than 2.5 lakh trees along the RRTS corridor from Sahibabad to Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut, a statement said on Wednesday. This initiative aims to contribute to the green cover and sustainable environment, aligning with global environmental protection goals, it said. Half of these saplings are being planted in the median under the viaduct along the 48-km RRTS corridor from Sahibabad to Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut where more than 95 per cent of the tree plantation works have been completed, it said. The remaining half of the saplings have been planted in the RRTS Depot in Duhai, the statement said. Plants planted in the median below the viaduct from Duhai to Shatabdi Nagar include Bougainvillea, Tecoma, Plumeria Alba, Allamanda, Mansoa, Jasmine, and Madhumalati. The NCRTC is installing solar panels on rooftop spaces along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS, which is expected to yield 12.5 million units of solar energy and reduce 11,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, officials said on Saturday. Cities in Delhi-NCR and covered under the National Clean Air Programme have utilised less than 40 per cent of the funds allocated to curb air pollution levels, the Centre informed Parliament on Thursday. According to data presented by Union Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the central government released Rs 428.61 crore to Delhi, Noida, Alwar, Meerut, Faridabad and Ghaziabad between 2019-20 and 2023-24. Of this, only Rs 170.58 crore (around 40 per cent) has been utilised. Delhi received Rs 38.22 crore but utilised only Rs 10.77 crore.
