Turkey strikes Kurdish militants in Iraq after warning for Ankara bombing

Turkish warplanes launched a new round of airstrikes against Kurdish militant targets in Iraq on Wednesday hours after the foreign minister warned that Turkiye would hit the militant group's positions in Syria and Iraq in retaliation for a suicide bombing in Ankara earlier this week. The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack outside the Interior Ministry in Ankara in which one attacker blew himself up and another would-be bomber was killed in a shootout with police. Two police were wounded in the attack. The Turkish jets targeted 22 suspected PKK positions in northern Iraq on Wednesday, destroying caves, shelters, and depots used by the militants, the Turkish defence ministry said. The PKK maintains bases in the region, where its leadership has a foothold. It was the Turkish air force's third airstrike against suspected Kurdish militant sites in northern Iraq following the attack, which came as parliament prepared to reopen after a lon

3 Palestinians killed as Israel stages raids in militant occupied West Bank

The Israeli military sent a large-scale raid into a stronghold of militants in the occupied West Bank early Monday, and local health officials said at least three Palestinians were killed. Israeli forces raided what the military described as a unified command center for militants in the Jenin refugee camp, describing it as an advanced observation and reconnaissance center where militants would gather to coordinate and prepare for attacks. Israeli media said the military also conducted airstrikes, reviving a tactic it had largely halted during the past two decades, after a Palestinian uprising against Israel's open-ended occupation slowly fizzled. The Palestinian Health Ministry said three Palestinians were killed and 13 injured early Monday, three of them critically. In a separate incident, a 21-year-old Palestinian was killed by Israeli fire near the West Bank city of Ramallah, the ministry said. The Jenin camp and an adjacent town of the same name have been a flashpoint as ...

Cease-fire between Israel, militants in Gaza appears to hold after fighting

A fragile cease-fire between Israeli forces and militants in the Gaza Strip appeared to be holding on Sunday, after a five-day clash that killed 33 Palestinians and two people in Israel. The latest round of Gaza fighting was sparked on Tuesday when Israeli jets killed three top commanders from the Islamic Jihad militant group in response to earlier rocket launches from Gaza. Those killings set off a barrage of militant fire and the conflagration threatened to drag the region into another all-out war until an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire took hold late Saturday. While the calm appeared to bring a sense of relief to Gaza's 2 million people and hundreds of thousands of Israelis who had been largely confined to bomb shelters in recent days, the agreement did nothing to address the underlying issues that have fuelled numerous rounds of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip over the years. In Gaza, residents surveyed the latest damage caused to their .

110 detained in Turkey over suspected Kurdish militant links: Report

Police in Turkiye carried out raids on homes in 21 provinces on Tuesday, detaining some 110 people for alleged links to Kurdish militants, the country's state-run news agency reported. The raids, which come weeks ahead of Turkiye's May 14 parliamentary and presidential elections, targeted politicians, journalists, lawyers and human rights activists, Tayip Temel, a deputy leader of the country's pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party, or HDP, wrote on Twitter. On the eve of the election, the government has resorted once again to detentions out of fear of losing power, Temel tweeted. The detained are suspected of financing the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, of recruiting members or of engaging in propaganda on behalf of the group, Anadolu Agency reported. The group, which has led a decades-long insurgency in Turkiye, is considered a terror organisation by the United States and the European Union. The pro-Kurdish Mezopotamya agency reported that one of its editors and a ...

Number of militants on all-time low in Jammu and Kashmir, says DGP

Militancy has not ended in Jammu and Kashmir yet, but it is on the wane as the number of ultras has declined to an all-time low, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said on Thursday. Singh made the statement while speaking to reporters in north Kashmir's Bandipora district. "The militancy in J-K is not over, but it is ending. The number of militants whether locals or Pakistani terrorists, is at an all-time low," he said. The DGP said the local youth who were pushed towards militancy, have now returned to the mainstream after leaving that path. "The youth have understood that it (militancy) is the path of destruction. Today, they have many avenues in sports and education among other options. Many youths have taken the right path and are working towards their careers, lives and families. "I am happy that the police and the security forces have brought terrorism under control to a larger extent and action is on to end the remnants of terror," he added. Answering a question on dr

Militant attack kills 10 in Syria, Kurdish forces arrest 52 militants

A militant rocket attack in eastern Syria on Friday targeted a bus with oil industry employees, killing at least 10, the government said. To the north, Syrian Kurdish-led forces announced they arrested 52 militants in an operation against the Islamic State group's sleeper cells. According to Syria's petroleum ministry, the rocket struck in the Al-Taym gas field in eastern Deir el-Zour province. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitoring group, said IS was behind the attack. The Observatory also reported a higher death toll from the rocket attack, saying at least 12 workers were killed. Also Friday, the US-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said their raids had reportedly thwarted an attack planned for New Year's Eve. The IS militants were hiding in residential areas and farms, a statement from the forces said. The years long US-backed campaign had succeeded in crushing the ...
