BJP courting ZPM to secure deputy CM's post: Cong ahead of Mizoram polls

Sensing that defeat was imminent for the ruling MNF in Mizoram, the BJP was courting the opposition ZPM, hoping to secure the deputy CM's post in the new government, the Congress claimed on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference, state Congress spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei claimed that a "secret agreement" was struck between the ZPM and the BJP, and ZPM leader Lalduhoma's recent trips to Guwahati are a testament to it. "The BJP's strategy of aligning with regional parties in states where they lack the chance to win independently is nothing new. Currently, both the ZPM and MNF are vying to be the closer ally of the BJP," claimed Renthlei, who is the state Congress's Media Cell chairman. The BJP was gradually distancing itself from the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and inching closer towards main opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) with a "secret pact", he said. Mizoram Assembly elections 2023: Brus hold key to Hachhek constituency

Even though more than 35,000 Bru people have migrated to Tripura after ethnic riots more than a decade back, around 5,000 of the tribals as well as voters from other smaller minority tribes still hold the key to the Hachhek assembly constituency in Mamit district of Mizoram that will go to polls on November 7. The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM), the Congress and the BJP are leaving no stone unturned to earn the confidence of Bru voters who stayed back in their native villages in the assembly segment even after the signing of the quadripartite pact involving the Centre, the governments of Mizoram and Tripura and tribal leaders, which saw many Brus being permanently resettled in the neighbouring state. Of the 23,600 eligible electors, over 5,000 Bru voters may play a "key role as will around 2,000 voters belonging to Chakma and Tripuri tribes in the upcoming elections", said leaders cutting across the party lines. 'We have no interest in Mizoram elections': Resettled Bru families

Hundreds of Bru families from Mizoram, who had migrated and settled in neighbouring Tripura following ethnic clashes, do not bother about the assembly elections in their home state. The 40-member Mizoram assembly goes to the polls on November 7. The names of more than 6,000 Bru voters from nine assembly constituencies in three districts - Mamit, Kolasib and Lunglei - have been deleted from the Mizoram voters' list following their resettlement in Tripura. "We have no interest in Mizoram elections even if some of us had voted there in the last polls. Now, we are permanent residents of Tripura following the 2020 historic accord. It hardly matters to us who comes to power in that state," Charles, secretary of Kaskoupata Bru resettlement village in North Tripura district, told PTI.
