Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the northeastern state has registered a 52 per cent growth in Goods and Services Tax (GST) in April this year. Quoting the data released by the Union Finance Ministry, Lalduhoma on Friday said that Mizoram collected Rs 108 crore in GST in April this year against Rs 71 crore collected in the same period the previous year. He attributed the growth in GST collection to massive efforts made by the state finance, planning and taxation department in revenue collection. "The reason behind the growth in GST collection is due to the massive efforts made by the finance, planning and taxation departments. People and business communities in particular are also aware of the importance of giving taxes to augment our revenue," the chief minister said. Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Friday summoned an assembly session for three days which will commence on December 12, a senior official said. Pro-tem Speaker Lalfamkima will preside over the first day of the session and administer oath to the members. The election of the new speaker will also be held on that day, the official said. Lalfamkima, who was elected from the Kolasib constituency, was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker on Friday. Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma was also sworn in as the chief minister of Mizoram on Friday. Eleven other ministers also took oath at Raj Bhavan here. With a 40-member assembly, Mizoram can have 12 ministers, including the chief minister. The ZPM, which was registered as a political party only in 2019, emerged victorious in the assembly elections bagging 27 seats, increasing its tally from 8 in the 2018 polls. The MNF, which was trounced in the Mizoram Assembly election, Wednesday rejected the resignation of its president Zoramthanga and agreed that he will continue in the post, party sources said. The national core committee and political affairs committee of MNF rejected Zoramthanga's resignation and lauded his gesture of taking the moral responsibility of his defeat, MNF senior vice-president Tawnluia said. The meeting felt that the election outcome is the collective responsibility of the party and not of the president alone, he said. Zoramthanga, who served as chief minister of the state for 30 long years, had put in his papers following the party's debacle in the election. The counting of votes was held on Monday. Zoram People's Movement leader Lalduhoma will take oath as the Mizoram chief minister on Friday, Raj Bhavan sources said. Lalduhoma called on Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Wednesday to stake a claim to form the government. "Lalduhoma will be sworn in as the chief minister on Friday at a function to be held at Raj Bhavan at 11 am," the sources said. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the counting of votes for the assembly elections in Mizoram, which saw a three-way fight between the ruling MNF, the ZPM and the Congress, on Monday. The counting was supposed to happen on Sunday along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. However, it was deferred by the Election Commission following appeals by political parties, NGOs, churches and students' bodies as Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram, a Christian-majority state. The Mizoram Election department is giving training to officials on counting of votes for the state assembly election, a senior officer said. Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas said that a full dress rehearsal for counting will be held through the Encore portal on Thursday. Additional CEO H Lianzela said more than 4,000 counting personnel will be involved in the counting to be held on December 3. Counting will be held in 13 counting centres across the state and there will be 40 counting halls in 13 counting centres, he said. "There are 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables and over 4,000 personnel for counting of votes," he said. Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla said that "full proof security arrangements have been made for counting of votes." He had said Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), IRBn and Mizoram armed police have been deployed to maintain law and order. The Mizoram assembly elections passed off peacefully on Tuesday with over 77 per cent of 8.57 lakh electors exercising their franchise, officials said. The voting percentage is likely to touch 80 as final reports are yet to come from far-flung districts, additional chief electoral officer H Lianzela said. According to the Election Commission data at 6pm, 77.39 per cent voter turnout was recorded. In the 2018 state polls, the overall voter turnout was 81.61 per cent. Lianzela said voting was underway in certain polling stations even at 5pm, an hour after the 4pm deadline, as people waited in queues to exercise their franchise. Polling in all the 1,276 polling stations was peaceful, the official said, adding 174 candidates, including 18 women, are in the fray. Of the 11 districts, central Mizoram's Serchhip recorded the highest polling percentage of 84.49, followed by Hnahthial (84.16) and Khawzawl (82.39). Around 33 per cent of 8.57 lakh electors cast their votes in the first four hours of polling on Tuesday in the Mizoram assembly elections, officials said. Polling, which began at 7 am, will continue till 4 pm. According to the polling trends, the voting percentage has been recorded at 32.68 per cent till 11 am, as per the Election Commission data. Of the 11 districts, Lawngtlai recorded the highest polling percentage of 39.88 per cent, followed by Khawzawl at 36.98 per cent and Serchhip 36.86 per cent till 11 am, it added. Saitual witnessed the lowest turnout of 26.15 per cent in the first four hours, followed by 29.62 per cent in Aizawl and 30.55 per cent in Lunglei district, according to the ECI data.
