BEST bus accident: Driver was not drunk, didn't have illness, say police

Medical tests of the driver involved in the Kurla BEST bus accident, which claimed eight lives, have indicated he did not have any mental disorder and was not drunk at the time of the incident, police said on Wednesday. The electric bus, hired on a wet-lease basis by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and driven by Sanjay More, ploughed into a crowd in Mumbai's Kurla area on December 9. The accident claimed eight lives and left more than 40 persons injured. Several vehicles were also damaged in the incident. More (54) is in police custody for alleged reckless driving and booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. 'Drunk' man threatens to assassinate PM Modi, nabbed by cops in Ajmer

A 37-year-old man was held from Ajmer in Rajasthan for allegedly sending a message to the Mumbai traffic police helpline threatening to harm Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an official said on Monday. Jharkhand resident Mohammad Nadim Baig Mirza was held by a team of Worli police, the official added. "Our probe has found Mirza, who works as a turner in a private firm, was angry as its owner asked him to go home for coming to work after consuming alcohol. In anger, he sent the threat message against the PM to the Mumbai traffic police helpline on Saturday. A case was registered at the time with Worli police station," the official said. "He was tracked down with the help of technical support and arrested from Ajmer. He has been served a notice to remain present in court. Further probe is underway," the official added.

Baba Siddique murder: MCOCA court remands 8 accused in custody till Dec 16

A special MCOCA court in Mumbai on Saturday remanded eight accused in the Baba Siddique murder case in judicial custody till December 16. The NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister was shot dead on October 12 in Nirmal Nagar in Bandra. Mumbai police has arrested 26 persons in the case so far, and the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was invoked against all of them on November 30. Eight accused, including alleged main shooter Shivkumar Gautam, were produced before the special judge for cases under MCOCA, A M Patil on Saturday at the end of their police remand. The court remanded them in judicial custody as sought by the probe agency. The remaining accused are already in judicial remand. Mumbai Police receives message threatening attempt on PM Modi's life

Mumbai Police on Saturday received a message threatening to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an official said. The number from which the message was sent was traced to Ajmer in Rajasthan and a police team was sent there immediately to nab the suspect, said an official. The WhatsApp message, received on the helpline of the traffic police in the early hours, mentioned two ISI agents and a plot to carry out a bomb blast to target Modi, he said. The investigators suspect that the sender is a mentally disturbed person or was under the influence of alcohol but further probe was on, the official added. A First Information Report was registered under the relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections. The helpline of the Mumbai traffic police has received hoax threat messages many times in the past.

More than 30,000 police personal have been deployed on security duty in Mumbai for the Maharashtra assembly elections to be held on Wednesday, officials said. Elaborate arrangements have been made to maintain law and order and ensure smooth conduct of the elections, a police official said on Tuesday. Five additional commissioners of police, 20 deputy commissioners of police, 83 assistant commissioners of police, more than 2,000 other police officers and 25,000 personnel have been deployed, he said. In the run-up to the November 20 Maharashtra assembly elections, police have seized Rs 2.3 crore cash from 12 persons at Kalbadevi in south Mumbai, officials said on Friday. Acting on inputs, a team of Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station and poll officials intercepted a group of people on Thursday night. While a search led to the discovery of Rs 2.3 crore, the individuals could neither produce any documents linked to the cash nor explain why they were carrying so much money, an official said. As the model code of conduct for the state elections is in force, surveillance teams formed on the instructions of the Election Commission are checking the movement of potential inducements like cash, liquor, and other items. After paperwork and questioning, which went on till the early hours of Friday, the money was seized and the 12 persons carrying the cash were detained, he said. The cash was later handed over to the Income Tax department for further probe, the official added.

Sanjay Verma replaces Rashmi Shukla as Maha's Director General of Police

Sanjay Kumar Verma was on Tuesday appointed as the state's new Director General of Police (DGP) in place of Rashmi Shukla, who was removed on a directive of the Election Commission of India (ECI), an official said.
