Amethi murder case: Prime accused Chandan shifted to jail in Raebareli

Chandan Verma, accused of killing a Dalit family in Amethi, has been shifted to the district jail here, officials said on Sunday. Verma (35), who was arrested on Friday, was shot by the police on Saturday while they were trying to recover the pistol he allegedly used in the killing. He was admitted to the hospital from where he was shifted to the district jail on Saturday evening. Verma was produced before the court on Saturday evening and sent to jail. Jail Superintendent Aman Kumar said Verma reached the jail at around 8 pm on Saturday. The government school teacher, his 32-year-old wife Poonam and their two daughters, Drishti and Suni, were shot dead in the Ahorwa Bhawani area of Amethi on October 3. During the initial investigation, the police found that Poonam had lodged an FIR against the accused in Rae Bareli on August 18 for eve-teasing and under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The complainant had also mentioned that "if anyt

Man, 4 daughters found dead in rented house in Delhi's Vasant Kunj

The decomposed bodies of a 46-year-old man and his four daughters, two of them differently-abled, have been found from their rented accommodation in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area, police said on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Heeralal Sharma, who worked as a carpenter at the Indian Spinal Injury Centre in Vasant Kunj for the last 28 years, and his four daughters -- Neetu (26), Nikki (24), Neeru (23) and Nidhi (20). The bodies, found on Friday afternoon, did not have any injury mark. Police found three packets of celphos poison, five glasses and a spoon containing a suspicious liquid from the house. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide as no evidence of any foul play has been found. While police said the two youngest daughters of the man were differently-abled, neighbours claimed that all four were physically challenged. The claim is being verified, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Rohit Meena said. According to locals, the women hardly stepped ou

Delhi court frames murder charges against Tytler in 1984 anti-Sikh riots

Forty years after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a Delhi court on Friday framed charges for murder and other offences against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a case related to the killing of three people in north Delhi's Pul Bangash area. Special Judge Rakesh Siyal directed that Tytler face trial after he pleaded not guilty to the offences. Besides murder, the court ordered framing of charges for several other offences, including unlawful assembly, rioting, promoting enmity between different groups, house trespass and theft. The judge had on August 30 said there was sufficient ground to proceed against the accused. The CBI had on May 20, 2023 filed a charge sheet against Tytler in the case. Tytler "incited, instigated and provoked the mob assembled at Pul Bangash Gurudwara Azad Market" on November 1, 1984 that resulted in burning down of the gurudwara and killing of three Sikhs -- Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh -- the CBI alleged in its charge sheet. The agency had in

1991 Multani murder case: SC to not quash fresh FIR against ex-Punjab DGP

The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to interfere with a fresh FIR lodged against former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in the 1991 disappearance and murder of junior engineer Balwant Singh Multani. A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Pankaj Mithal said that in view of the subsequent development of a charge sheet being filed in the case, it would not like to interfere with the FIR. The top court, however, said that observations and findings recorded in the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict dated September 8, 2020, will not come in the way of proceedings before the trial court. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Saini, sought quashing of the FIR, saying it was lodged in 2020 after decades of the alleged incident due to political reasons. He said that time and again this court had granted relief to Saini, who is a decorated officer, and even protected him from any coercive action in the case. Justice Sundresh said that since the charge sheet has been filed in the case, it

RG Kar Hospital case: Prime accused sent to judicial remand till Sept 20

A Kolkata court on Friday rejected the bail prayer of Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a woman medic in a state-run hospital, and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days till September 20. The lawyers associated with the case were present in the court physically, while the accused was there in virtual mode. When the hearing of the case began, Roy started crying, CBI sources said. His counsel, appointed by the state Legal Aid, prayed for bail stating that her client was framed and he has no link to the crime. The CBI counsel, who reached the court 40 minutes late, opposed the bail plea saying that it would hamper their ongoing investigation. After hearing both sides, the judge remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Earlier, the judge expressed displeasure since the CBI's investigating officer (IO) and the lawyer were initially absent. The central agency is investigating the matter on an order of the Calcutta High Court. The ruling Trinamool Cong
