Man serving 30 years for attacking Nancy Pelosi's husband gets life term

The man who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for attacking the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer in their California home was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole following a separate state trial. A San Francisco jury in June found David DePape guilty of charges including aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary and false imprisonment of an elder. Before issuing the sentence, Judge Harry Dorfman dismissed arguments from DePape's attorneys that he be granted a new trial for the 2022 attack against Paul Pelosi, who was 82 years old at the time. It's my intention that Mr. DePape will never get out of prison, he can never be paroled," Dorfman said while handing out the punishment. One of the defense attorneys, Adam Lipson, asked Dorfman before the sentence was handed down to consider DePape's mental health and isolation that made him susceptible to online propaganda. This is a man who has always been a peaceful,

It's my life goal to ensure Trump never steps in White House again: Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi's influence can be seen all across the Democratic Party shakeup that in a few short, agonising weeks has reengineered the 2024 presidential ticket and the race for the White House. It was Pelosi who publicly encouraged President Joe Biden to make a decision about his reelection campaign when he had already insisted he had no plans to step aside. Once he exited and endorsed Kamala Harris atop the ticket, it was Pelosi who was a big fan of her future running mate, Tim Walz. For the House speaker emerita the upheaval is less about Biden, a friend of 40 years, and more about Republican Donald Trump, the former president she refers to as Bozo, a snake-oil salesman, what's his name and the creature from the Black Lagoon. How can I say this in the nicest possible way: My goal in life was that man would never step in the White House again, Pelosi said, slapping the table with every word. Pelosi spoke Wednesday with reporters and columnists about her new book, The Art of Power,

US election: Ex-Speaker Pelosi endorses Kamala Harris as prez candidate

Top Democratic leader and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's presidential nominee after President Joe Biden stepped aside amid concerns from within their party that he would be unable to defeat Republican Donald Trump. Harris, 59, is mostly likely to be the presidential nominee of the Democratic party now that she has been endorsed by President Joe Biden, who announced on Sunday that he will not seek re-election, as well as other top party leaders including former president Bill Clinton. Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country's future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States, Pelosi said in a statement. The endorsement from Pelosi, 84, is significant given that she is a towering personality within the Democratic Party. Officially, I have seen Kamala Harris's strength and courage as a champion for working families, notably fighting for a woman's right t

Obama, Pelosi refrain from immediately endorsing Harris as Prez nominee

Former US president Barack Obama and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Sunday praised President Joe Biden for deciding to step aside from the presidential race but stopped short of endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's nominee for the November 5 general elections. Biden (81) announced that he was withdrawing from the race to be the next president, following mounting pressure from Democrats after a faltering debate performance against Republican candidate Trump last month. He has endorsed 59-year-old Harris to be the new Democratic nominee. Though Biden's endorsement almost seals Harris' position as the presidential nominee of her party, she still needs to get elected by the party's delegates during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month. Biden has 3,896 delegates in his kitty, as against 1,976 required to win the nomination. Harris immediately secured the endorsement of former president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clint

Pelosi delivers speech with notable absence Biden's future as nominee

In a state expected to help decide the presidency, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi did little to quell speculation on President Joe Biden's path forward as the Democratic nominee to a room full of North Carolina Democrats on Saturday. Pelosi addressed more than 900 people at the North Carolina Democratic Party fundraiser in Raleigh an event billed as the annual Unity Dinner during a time of significant national discord over how the party will proceed in the 2024 presidential election. All eyes are on Democratic leaders like Pelosi, who colleagues say has her finger on the party's pulse, to get a glimpse of what Biden's future holds. The power she holds in the Democratic Party and in the direction the party takes was no better emphasized than in her introduction by U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-N.C. When Nancy Pelosi speaks, everybody listens, Adams said. And with everybody listening, Pelosi gave a speech largely absent of mentions to Biden's presidential bid. Pelosi spent most of

China's industrial overcapacity has significant spillovers globally: US

China's industrial manufacturing overcapacity has significant spillovers around the world, the Joe Biden administration said on Wednesday, noting that addressing these challenges may warrant taking defensive action to protect firms and workers -- and the traditional toolkit of trade actions may not be sufficient. "We are growing concerned that China's enduring macroeconomic imbalances and non-market policies and practices pose a significant risk to workers and businesses in the United States and the rest of the world. We are worried that these features of China's economy can lead to industrial overcapacity that has significant spillovers around the world and can compromise our collective supply chain resilience, given the resulting over-concentration in some manufacturing sectors," Under Secretary for International Affairs Jay Shambaugh said. The United States, along with its allies and partners in developing economies and advanced economies alike, share mutual objectives to address

30 yrs in prison for man who attacked Nancy Pelosi's husband with hammer

The man who broke into the home of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seeking to hold her hostage and bludgeoned her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison. But prosecutors later filed a motion saying the court failed to offer the defendant, David DePape, an opportunity to speak or present any information to mitigate the sentence" as required by federal rule. They asked the court to reopen the sentencing portion to allow him that option. The court did not immediately respond. A jury found DePape, 44, guilty in November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term. The attack on Paul Pelosi, who was 82 at the time, was captured on police body camera video just days before the 2022 midterm elections and sent shockwaves through the political world. He suffered two head wounds including a skull fracture that was mended with plates and screws he will

Nikki Haley questions Trump's mental fitness as he confuses her for Pelosi

Nikki Haley on Saturday questioned whether Donald Trump is mentally capable of serving as president again after he repeatedly seemed to confuse her with former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a campaign speech. As she campaigned in Keene, New Hampshire, Haley referenced Trump's speech the night before, in which he mistakenly asserted that Haley was in charge of Capitol security on January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building seeking to stop the certification of his loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump first said that Haley turned down security offered by his administration on Jan. 6 and then again mentioned Haley, adding, They destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it. Trump, 77, has accused Pelosi of turning down security he says his administration offered, but a special House committee empaneled to probe the attack found no evidence to support that claim. They're saying he got confused, that he was .

Man who 'attacked' Nancy Pelosi's husband says he wanted to end corruption

The man accused of attacking former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband with a hammer last year told jurors at his federal trial Tuesday how he went to the Pelosis' San Francisco home as part of a bigger plan to end corruption in the United States. David DePape spoke for more than an hour, often getting emotional and crying about how his political leanings went from leftist to right-wing after reading a comment on a YouTube video about former President Donald Trump. He said he went to the Pelosis' home to talk to Pelosi about Russian involvement in the 2016 election, and that he planned to wear an inflatable unicorn costume and upload his interrogation of her online. Prosecutors say DePape bludgeoned Paul Pelosi in the early hours of October 28, 2022, just days before the midterm elections, and that he had rope and zip ties with him. DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with

Pelosi assault: Defence to call witnesses in trial of man accused of attack

Defence attorneys for David DePape, the man on trial for the attack of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in the couple's San Francisco home, will call witnesses on Tuesday as they argue DePape is not guilty of the crimes he's been charged with. The trial's third day will start with a final witness from the prosecution, and defense attorneys say they hope to wrap up their case by day's end. The case would then go to jurors. Prosecutors say DePape bludgeoned Paul Pelosi in the early hours of October 28, 2022, just days before the midterm elections, and that he had rope and zip ties with him. DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for performance of their duties. Defence attorney Jodi Linker told jurors last week that she won't dispute that DePape attacked Pelosi. Instead, she will argue that DePape believed that he was taking

Speaker Nancy Pelosi won't seek leadership role, plans to stay in Congress

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday that she will not seek a leadership position in the new Congress, a pivotal realignment making way for a new generation of leaders after Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans in the midterm elections. Pelosi announced in a spirited speech on the House floor that she will step aside after leading Democrats for nearly 20 years and in the aftermath of the brutal attack on her husband, Paul, last month in their San Francisco home. The California Democrat, who rose to become the nation's first woman to wield the speaker's gavel, said she would remain in Congress as the representative from San Francisco, a position she has held for 35 years, when the new Congress convenes in January. Now we must move boldly into the future, Pelosi said. I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress, Pelosi said. "For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect. She ..

Pelosi to announce 'future plans' with colleagues after GOP wins House

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to address her plans with colleagues on Thursday in the wake of Democrats narrowly losing control of the House to Republicans in the midterm elections. Pelosi's decision to either seek another term as the Democratic leader or to step aside has been widely anticipated. It would come after the party was able to halt an expected Republican wave in the House and Senate but also in the aftermath of a brutal attack on her husband, Paul, late last month in their San Francisco home. The Speaker plans to address her future plans tomorrow to her colleagues. Stay tuned, Pelosi's spokesman Drew Hammill tweeted late on Wednesday. He did not provide additional information about the time or location of the announcement. The speaker has been overwhelmed by calls from colleagues, friends and supporters, Hammill said, and noted that she had spent on Wednesday evening monitoring election returns in the final states where ballots were still being counted. Nancy Pelosi holds open option of another term as House Democratic leader

With control of the House still hanging in the balance, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stayed mum Sunday on her future plans but said congressional colleagues are urging her to seek another term as Democratic leader following a strong showing in the midterm elections. Appearing in Sunday news shows, Pelosi said Democrats are "still alive" in their fight to win the chamber and that she will make a decision on whether to run for House leadership in the next couple weeks. "People are campaigning and that's a beautiful thing. And I'm not asking anyone for anything," she said, referring to House Democratic leadership elections set for November 30. "My members are asking me to consider doing that. But, again, let's just get through the (midterm) election." "A great deal is at stake, because we will be in a presidential election," Pelosi said. Over the weekend, Democrats clinched control of the Senate following Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto's victory in Nevada. But in the House, a majority remains ..
