Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said while the Narendra Modi government is hiking the rates of the income tax and other taxes for the common man, it is giving concessions to billionaires, and claimed that it is set to introduce another slab of the GST to burden people. Gandhi said the Congress will continue to oppose this "injustice" of imposing higher tax rates on things of daily use and giving concessions to big billionaires. "See another example of concessions to capitalists and looting common people. "On one hand, the income tax is increasing constantly in comparison to the corporate tax. On the other hand, the Modi government is preparing to collect more money through Gabbar Singh Tax," he said in a post in Hindi on X. "It is heard that amidst the ever-increasing collection from the GST, the government is going to introduce a new tax slab -- there is a plan to increase the GST on things of daily need. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra said on Saturday that the "excavation of mosques" becoming the focus of politics instead of development is wrong while people are reeling under inflation and farmers protesting. Expressing apprehension about a potential spike in communal issues, Vadra also said (conducting) surveys of mosques is wrong. The religion and politics should be kept separate as India is a diverse, secular nation, he told PTI Videos. Vadra said he has been visiting different places of worship in the country as part of his "spiritual trips" and offered chaddar at the famous Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai on Saturday. "I prayed for the well-being of my family and the country. I wish brotherhood prevails in the society, " he said. Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, said surveying mosques is wrong. "Even as people are suffering because of the inflation and farmers are protesting, the focus is on the excavation of mosques, which is wrong. Communal

Governments before 2014 worked piecemeal while trying to achieve the Constitutional objective of a welfare state but this concept was turned into reality by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Amit Shah said on Saturday. Shah said Modi understood the mantra that "development of India cannot happen until its 60 crore population remains poor", and worked to lift 25 crore people from poverty in the last 10 years. "However, a government can never do such a big work alone. If trusts, individuals, and service organisations come together, we will soon come out of this problem," the Union Home Minister said while addressing a gathering at the annual Gujarat Lok Seva Trust event in Ahmedabad. Following a very learned debate, Constituent Assembly president Rajendra Prasad had concluded that establishing a welfare state should be the basic purpose of the Constitution, Shah said. The basic objective of creating a State by ensuring the welfare of every person, equal development, and th

In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, "BJP was saying 'one country, one tax' but this statement of theirs also turned out to be a 'jumlaai jhoot' (rhetoric) because now they are bringing new slabs of tax." "When there is 'one tax, many slabs' then the slogan of 'one tax' has proved to be a lie in the true sense. Actually, there is a big game behind increasing the tax rates. Speaking at the launch of writer-scholar Aditya Mukherjee's "Nehru's India", the Congress general secretary said one of the biggest takeaways from the book was that "not only the idea of India but the idea of Nehru itself needs to be defended". "...needs to be defended from its old critics, from its new critics, and it has to be reinterpreted for a changing India. I just want to say that we all live in the shadow of Nehru. Many of us have assimilated Nehru and many of us contest Nehru. And even those who contest Nehru cannot run away from the shadow of Nehru," the Rajya Sabha MP said. The book, published by Penguin, focuses on Nehru's understanding of history and India's cultural past while offering a window into his understanding of communalis
