Poland marks 85th anniv of Nazi Germany's invasion during World War II

Solemn ceremonies started early Sunday in Poland to mark the 85th anniversary of German Nazi forces invading and bombing Polish territory at the start of World War II. President Andrzej Duda attended observances in Wielun, the first civilian town targeted by German bombs in the small hours of September 1, 1939. Meanwhile, at a monument on the Baltic Sea's Westerplatte peninsula, where a military outpost was shelled by a German warship just minutes after Wielun was attacked, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz laid wreaths and attended a memorial roll call for fallen soldiers. At the time, the outpost's outnumbered troops fought for seven days before surrendering to the Germans, becoming a symbol of heroism and patriotism. In more than five years of war and brutal German occupation, Poland lost 6 million citizens or a sixth of its population, of which 3 million were Jewish. The country also suffered huge losses to its infrastructure, industry an

Marine accused of Nazi salute during Capitol riot gets almost 5 yrs of jail

A Marine who stormed the US Capitol and apparently flashed a Nazi salute in front of the building was sentenced on Friday to nearly five years in prison. Tyler Bradley Dykes, of South Carolina, was an active-duty Marine when he grabbed a police riot shield from the hands of two police officers and used it to push his way through police lines during the attack by the mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters on January 6, 2021. Dykes, who pleaded guilty in April to assault charges, previously was convicted of a crime stemming from the 2017 white nationalist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dykes was transferred to federal custody in 2023 after he served a six-month sentence in a state prison. US District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced Dykes, who's 26, to four years and nine months of imprisonment, the Justice Department said. Federal prosecutors had recommended a prison sentence of five years and three months for Dykes. He directly contributed to some of the

Nazi death camp survivors mark 79th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation

A group of survivors of Nazi death camps will mark the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp during World War II in a modest ceremony Saturday in southern Poland. Some 20 survivors from various camps set up by Nazi Germany around Europe were to lay wreaths at the Death Wall in Auschwitz and hold prayers at the monument in Birkenau. They will memorialize some 1.1 million camp victims, mostly Jews. The attentively preserved memorial site and museum are located near the city of Oswiecim. Nearly 6 million European Jews were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust the mass murder of Jews and other groups before and during World War II. Canada House speaker resigns for inviting man who fought for Nazis to Parl

The speaker of Canada's House of Commons resigned Tuesday for inviting a man who fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II to Parliament to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president. Just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an address in the House of Commons on Friday, Canadian lawmakers gave 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka a standing ovation when Speaker Anthony Rota drew attention to him. Rota introduced Hunka as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division. Observers over the weekend began to publicize the fact that the First Ukrainian Division also was known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis. No one in this House is above any of us. Therefore I must step down as your speaker, Rota said in Parliament. I reiterate my profound regret for my error in recognizing an individual in the House during the joint address to Parliament of President Zelenskyy. "That .

Canadian leader apologises for honouring man who fought for Nazis

The speaker of Canada's House of Commons has apologised for recognising a man who fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II. In my remarks following the address of the President of Ukraine, I recognised an individual in the gallery. I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so, Rota said in a statement on Sunday. He added that his fellow Parliament members and the Ukraine delegation were not aware of his plan to recognise Hunka. Rota noted Hunka is from his district. "I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world. I accept full responsibility for my action," R

Kishida marks 78th year of WWII's end, doesn't mention Japan's agression

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida renewed a peace pledge Tuesday as Japan observed the 78th anniversary of its World War II defeat but did not mention the country's wartime aggression in Asia, while three of his former and current Cabinet ministers visited a shrine seen by neighboring countries as a symbol of militarism. Japan will stick to our resolve to never repeat the tragedy of the war, Kishida said at a solemn ceremony in a speech that was almost identical to what he read last year. The absence of any reference to Japanese aggression across Asia in the first half of the 1900s or its victims in the region followed a precedent set by then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2013, in what was seen by critics as a move to whitewash Japan's wartime brutality. Kishida stressed the destruction that Japan suffered from the war, including the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fire bombings across Japan and the bloody ground battle on Okinawa, and the suffering of Japanese ..

Germany to give $1.4 billion to Holocaust survivors globally in 2024

The organisation that handles claims on behalf of Jews who suffered under the Nazis said Thursday that Germany has agreed to extend another USD 1.4 billion (1.29 billion euros) overall for Holocaust survivors around the globe for the coming year. The compensation was negotiated with Germany's finance ministry and includes USD 888.9 million to provide home care and supportive services for frail and vulnerable Holocaust survivors. Additionally, increases of USD 175 million to symbolic payments of the Hardship Fund Supplemental programme have been achieved, impacting more than 128,000 Holocaust survivors globally, according to the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, also referred to as the Claims Conference. Every year these negotiations become more and more critical as this last generation of Holocaust survivors age and their needs increase," said Greg Schneider, the Claims Conference's executive vice president. "Being able to ensure direct payments t
