PIL seeking ban on Netflix series 'IC814: The Kandahar Hijack' withdrawn

A PIL seeking a ban on OTT series 'IC-814: The Kandahar hijack' for allegedly not revealing the real identities of the hijackers was withdrawn from the Delhi High Court on Friday. Petitioner Surjit Singh Yadav's counsel said since Netflix has now issued a disclaimer carrying the "names of the terrorists" in the series portraying the 1999 hijack of an Indian Airlines flight by Pakistan-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, he did not wish to press his plea. "The counsel for the petitioner said in view of the disclaimer inserted by respondents, he does not wish to press the present writ," a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. Disposing of the plea, Justice Manmohan remarked that for "completion", the makers could consider having another episode on the court proceedings in relation to the incident. "There is a judgement of the Punjab & Haryana High Court. Complete picture will emerge," he said. The petitioner's counsel said his grievance was

I&B Ministry summons content head of Netflix content over IC-814 series row

The government has summoned the content head of OTT platform Netflix over the series 'IC-814 -- The Kandahar Hijack', which has triggered a row over depiction of hijackers. Official sources said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the content head of Netflix India on Tuesday, seeking an explanation on the allegedly contentious aspects of the OTT series. The depiction of hijackers of the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi has kicked off a row with a section of viewers objecting to the 'humane' projection of the perpetrators. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya said the hijackers of IC-814 were dreaded terrorists, who acquired aliases to hide their Muslim identities. "Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, legitimised their criminal intent, by furthering their non-Muslim names," Malviya posted on X. "Decades later, people will think Hindus hijacked IC-814," he said. "Left's agenda to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, all Muslims, served. This is the power

NCPCR summons Netflix over sexually explicit content available to minors

The apex child rights body NCPCR has summoned Netflix officials next Monday for allegedly showing "sexually explicit content" on its platform that is accessible to minors. No immediate reaction was available from Netflix on the matter. In a letter to Netflix officials on Tuesday, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said "unrestricted accessibility of explicit content" on Netflix to minors constitutes a violation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act-2012. The NCPCR said it had written to Netflix earlier in June on the same matter but no response was received. "Now, therefore, the commission in pursuance of the functions and powers (under) order Section 14 of CPCR Act 2005 requires you to appear in person physically before the commission along with the details of the action taken in this matter at 1500 hours on July 29, 2024," the letter said.
