National Institute of Technology Raipur has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Bengaluru-based firm to set up an advanced chip research and development centre on its campus in Chhattisgarh's capital, an institute official said on Sunday. The POSIT system-based general purpose-graphics processing unit (GPGPU) advanced chip research and development centre will be named ViBram Silicon Hub and assistant professor of NIT Raipur Dr Sonal Yadav will head it, a public relations officer of the institute said. POSIT number system is an alternative to Floating Point number system and claims to deliver better performance and accuracy for high-performance applications, specifically those that involve significant mathematical computations, the official said. GPGPU advanced chips are used in smartphones, laptops, desktops, servers, and many other digital devices. These chips are also used in tsunami detection and satellite launch applications, he said. State-owned NBCC on Tuesday said it has bagged a contract worth Rs 560 crore to construct a permanent campus of the National Institute of Technology, Sikkim. In a regulatory filing, NBCC informed that it has bagged a contract for the construction of the permanent campus of NIT Sikkim at Dung dung Khamdong, Gangtok, Sikkim. The size of the contract is Rs 560 crore. NBCC is mainly into project management consultancy (PMC) and real estate.
A third-year student of NIT-Silchar allegedly died by suicide on the campus, following which his classmates began a protest that eventually turned violent, prompting the police to lathi charge, in which 40 people were injured, officials said on Saturday. The body of the student, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room on Friday evening. Alleging that he was forced to die by suicide because of the actions of the college authority, his classmates stopped the police from taking down the body. The post of chairperson in IITs and NITs is an honorary position. The chairpersons preside over the Board of Governors (BoGs) of the respective institutes. The Directors of these institutes are the principal academic and executive officers, according to the Act and Statutes governing these institutions. The information about the vacant positions was shared by Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi, for research-related activities, academic workshops and scientific conferences. IIT-Mandi Director Prof Laxmidhar Behera and NIT-Hamirpur Director Prof Hiralal Murlidhar Suryawanshi signed the MoU here on Wednesday evening. NIT-Hamirpur Registrar Prof Vinod Kumar said the agreement would allow undergraduate and postgraduate students of both the institutes to carry out their studies and research work in joint consultation with the two faculties. The faculty will also be able to share their academic knowledge and jointly publish research papers, he said. This agreement will enhance the quality of students at the two institutes. The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela is conducting centralised seat allocation process for admission to various undergraduate programs at NITs, IIEST, IIITs and School of Planning and Architecture this year, according to officials. The institute will also co-host the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), which will conduct six rounds of seat allocation. The registration for JoSAA rounds of seat allocation will commence on September 12. The CSAB-special rounds will begin on October 24 after the completion of JoSAA rounds. The whole counselling process is expected to be completed by November 6. Three students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela were offered annual pay packages of Rs 45 lakh, the highest so far, in the online placement drive for the academic year 2020-21, the institute said. With 84 companies offering 253 students more than Rs 10 lakh per annum, the average CTC offered was about Rs 9.36 lakh per annum, an increase of over 4 per cent from the previous year, an official release issued by the institute said. The IT and software sector has emerged as the top recruiter (41% of total recruitment) till date. The Core Engineering like Electrical & Electronics Manufacturing, Analytics and Consulting, Banking Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), and Education sectors sharing the rest of the part, it said.
