A team of scientists from India, China, Malaysia and the US has won this year's Ig Nobels, the prize for humorous scientific feats, in the mechanical engineering category for its study of repurposing dead spiders to be used in gripping tools, the organisers said. Counting nose hairs in cadavers, repurposing dead spiders, smart toilets idea, and explaining why scientists lick rocks, were among the 10 winning achievements in the 33rd Ig Nobel Prize ceremony. The prizes were announced on Thursday during an online event produced by the magazine Annals of Improbable Research'. The Nobel Prize is the premier award in science, reserved for those that "have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. Nobel Foundation raises amount for Nobel Prize awards to 11 million kronor

The Nobel Foundation said Friday that it will raise the award amount for this year's Nobel Prizes by 1 million kronor (USD 90,000) to 11 million kronor (USD 986,270) as the Swedish currency has plummeted recently. "The Foundation has chosen to increase the prize amount because it is financially viable to do so, it said in a brief statement. The rapid depreciation of the Swedish currency has pushed it to its lowest level ever against the euro and the US dollar. Sweden has been struggling with high inflation it was 7.5 per cent in August, down from 9.3 per cent in July, far from the 2 per cent target set by the Riksbank, Sweden's central bank. When the first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, the prize amount was 150,782 kronor per category, the foundation said. Over the past 15 years, the amount has been adjusted several times, it said. In 2012, it was reduced from 10 million kronor to 8 million kronor as a broad-based program to strengthen the Nobel Foundation's finances was ...

Won't hesitate to take steps: Visva-Bharati on land row with Amartya Sen

In a veiled attack on Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, Visva-Bharati authorities have said that it will not hesitate to take steps if any "internationally acclaimed" educationist violates the law to grab the central university's land. Without naming Sen, Visva Bharati spokesperson Mahua Bandyopadhyay said, in a statement in Bengali, that the varsity would not comment on the land issue as the matter is sub-judice. Every necessary step "to stop illegal activities and malpractices" will continue to be taken by the authorities, it said. Sen, who is currently living at his Santiniketan residence Pratichi, interacted with the media and a group of students on Wednesday. Asked by a visitor about "the humiliation faced by him in the land controversy", the Nobel laureate economist had reportedly said, "I don't think anyone can insult me as we have been living on this piece of land for 90 years". Referring to the conversation, the statement, issued on Thursday, said, "Visva Bharati has never ...

Uniform Civil Code is a difficult issue: Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen

Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen on Wednesday claimed that the Uniform Civil Code is a difficult issue and efforts are on to make it easy. The 90-year-old economist also said the UCC surely has a link with the concept of Hindu Rashtra. The Uniform Civil Code is a difficult issue. Now attempts are on to make it easy. There are differences among us. There are differences of religions, there are differences in rules and customs. We need to remove those differences and be united. I read in the newspaper that there should not be any more delay in implementing the Uniform Civil Code. No idea from where such a nonsense concept has come, Sen told reporters at his home here. To a question if the UCC has links with the idea of Hindu Rashtra, he said it surely has. But Hindu Rashtra is not the only way for progress Hinduism is being misused, said the Bharat Ratna awardee. The UCC refers to a common set of laws on marriage, divorce and inheritance that would be applicable to all Indian citizens ..

Russia, Belarus ambassadors barred from Nobel ceremony in Stockholm

The ambassadors of Russia and Belarus have been excluded from this year's Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm because of the war in Ukraine. The Nobel Foundation, a private foundation which administers the prestigious awards, normally invites ambassadors stationed in Sweden to the annual award ceremony on Dec. 10. But due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Nobel Foundation has chosen not to invite the ambassadors of Russia and Belarus to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, it said in a statement Tuesday. The foundation also said it would continue its practice of inviting the leaders of all parties in the Swedish Parliament, except the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats. The group, which has sought to distance itself from its far-right roots, won more than 20% of the vote in Sweden's Sept. 11 election to become the country's second biggest political party and a close partner of the new center-right government. The Nobel Foundation said it saw no reason to reconsider its previous
