Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Sunday that his government considers India's eastern region as the country's growth engine, while the area was considered backward earlier. Addressing a gathering at the "Odisha Parba" event here, the prime minister said investments of Rs 45,000 crore have been approved within 100 days of the formation of a new government in the state. "Odisha has always been a land of seers and scholars. The way the scholars here took our religious texts to every household and connected the public with those, it has played a crucial role in the cultural prosperity of India. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's support for the early construction of the proposed international airport at Puri. Speaking at the flagging off of the Puri-Howrah Vande Bharat Express, he urged Modi for two more such trains between Puri and Rourkela, and Bhubaneswar and Hyderabad. "I met the prime minister recently and had a detailed discussion on the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport at Puri. Odisha has bagged the third slot after Gujarat and Maharashtra in live investments worth Rs 177 lakh crore drawn by states at the end of FY17 from public and private sources.
