CNG taxi, autorickshaw fares to rise in Mumbai by Rs 3 from February 1

The MMRTA has approved a hike of Rs 3 in the basic fare of autorickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis from February 1 in Mumbai and its surrounding metropolitan region, an official said on Friday. A Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority release said the new basic fare for autorickshaws will be Rs 26 instead of Rs 23, while it will rise to Rs 31 from the current Rs 28 for black-and-yellow taxis. The fare for blue-and-silver AC cool cabs will start at Rs 48 instead of the current Rs 40 for the first 1.5 kilometres, the release added. The decision was approved in a meeting of the MMRTA on Thursday. The new fares can be charged only after meters are recalibrated, the MMRTA release clarified.

HC seeks Delhi govt stand on plea against lock-in period on auto transfer

The Delhi High Court has sought the stand of the city government on a petition against the restriction of a 5-year lock-in period on transfer of three-seater auto rickshaws (TSR) by the owners. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri issued notice to the Delhi government on May 31 on the petition by Auto Driver Kalyan Union, which claimed to be working for the welfare of TSR vehicle owners and drivers. The Delhi government counsel said a policy decision will be taken to explore the feasibility of carving out exceptions, and sought time from the court to file a status report. Advocate Beenashaw N Soni, the counsel for the petitioner, submitted the lock-in period of five years before TSR autos could be transferred, is an unreasonable restriction, which is in existence only in the national capital. No such restriction has been imposed on any other public utility vehicle. The petitioner has said because of the lock-in period imposed by the Delhi government, the owners of TSR autos, who have purchas

Ola, Uber drivers fret over 5% convenience fee on each autorickshaw ride

The Ola Uber Drivers and Owners' Association (OUDOA) and the autorickshaw drivers linked with the ride-hailing companies are apprehensive about the five per cent convenience fee and Goods and Services Tax levied on every autorickshaw ride taken up by passengers. The Karnataka government on November 25 directed the regional transport authorities to charge five per cent convenience fee and GST from the ride hailing companies on each autorickshaw ride by the passengers. OUDOA president Tanveer Pasha blamed the state government for not presenting the case properly before the Karnataka High Court. The government should have brought an amendment to the Karnataka On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators' Rules because there is no provision for autorickshaw in it, Pasha told PTI. "If they (transport department) had given proper information to the court, then the court would have directed the government to bring an amendment to the rule," he said. Pasha also alleged that the transpo

Autorickshaw aggregators can charge 10% surcharge, says Karnataka HC

The High Court of Karnataka has directed the State government to fix the fare of app-based autorickshaw aggregators within 15 days. Till then, the court allowed the service providers to also collect 10 per cent additional charge above the fare already fixed by the government. The government last fixed the autorickshaw fares on June 11, 2021. One of the reasons for the government to ban app-based autorickshaw-hailing service was that they were charging surcharge over and above the fare fixed by the government. Justice MGS Kamal, in his order issued on Friday, allowed the 10 per cent surcharge along with applicable GST and said this would be a only temporary measure till the new fares are fixed. The aggregators had sought at least 20 per cent surcharge, but the Transport Department was not willing to allow more than 10 per cent. Last week, the government banned app-based autorickshaw-hailing services on the grounds that the licence issued under the Karnataka On-Demand Transportation
