Protesting wrestlers approach Olympians in other nations for support

The protesting wrestlers on Monday decided to make their "agitation global" by approaching Olympic medallists and athletes from other countries and warned that if their demand for the arrest of former national federation (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is not heeded to, a "big call" will be taken after May 21. India's top wrestlers Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat among others are protesting at Jantar Mantar here for the last 23 days, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for allegedly sexually harassing women grapplers, including a minor. "We will make this protest global. We will approach Olympians and Olympic medallists in other countries. We will write to them asking them for their support," said 2018 Jakarta Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh. Cindy Hook appointed CEO of 2032 Olympic organising committee in Brisbane

American executive Cindy Hook has been appointed as the inaugural CEO of the organising committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane. The organising committee announced the appointment on Tuesday after engaging with 50 candidates over six months. Hook was based in Singapore as CEO of Deloitte Asia Pacific until June and had previously worked for the international professional services network in the US and in Australia, moving to Sydney in 2009 to lead the auditing practice for six years and later becoming CEO of the Australian operation in 2015. "The opportunity to lead the Olympics and Paralympics is once in a lifetime," Hook said. "The idea of setting up the organisation, building the team, creating a vision and driving to a smooth delivery of Brisbane 2032 is very exciting and I expect it will be both challenging and rewarding." SC approves timeline for IOA executive committee poll to be held on Dec 10

The Supreme Court on Thursday approved a fresh timeline submitted by the Justice (retired) L N Rao committee for the election of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) executive committee, to be held on December 10. A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli also allowed circulation of the draft amended constitution among members of the IOA so that it could be adopted in the general body meeting scheduled to be held on November 10. It said former apex court judge Justice L N Rao has submitted a note dated November 2 which indicates the comprehensive exercise which has been carried out by him on an expedited basis and this court appreciates the alacrity with which the assignment has been taken up in the national interest. 1960 Rome Olympian and national football coach SS Hakim dead

Syed Shahid Jakim, former India footballer and member of the last national team that played in the 1960 Rome Olympics, died on Sunday at a hospital in Gulbarga, family sources said. Hakim 'saab' as he was popularly known, was 82 years old at the time of his death. He had very recently suffered a stroke after which he was admitted to a hospital in Gulbarga. In his more than five-decade association with Indian football, Hakim, a Dronacharya Awardee, has also been an assistant coach to late PK Banerjee during the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi and also independently has been in charge of the national team during a tournament in Merdeka. At the domestic level, his finest hour as coach came when he guided Mahindra & Mahindra (now Mahindra United) to the Durand Cup title in 1988, beating a formidable East Bengal team. The Indian badminton contingent spearheaded by PV Sindhu and the Table Tennis team on Sunday were cleared to travel to Games Village for the Tokyo Olympics which gets underway from July 23.An 88 member Indian contingent including 54 athletes arrived in Tokyo on Sunday for the upcoming Olympic Games.
