Amazon buys MX Player, merges it with miniTV to launch Amazon MX Player

Amazon on Monday said it has acquired free streaming OTT platform MX Player and merged it with its content streaming service miniTV to launch 'Amazon MX Player'. Amazon did not disclose the valuation of the acquisition. The merger aims to make premium-free entertainment accessible to a larger audience. "Amazon recently acquired certain assets of MX Player, including the MX Player app, a leading free streaming OTT service in India. With this acquisition, Amazon is merging two of India's most popular free AVOD (or ad-supported video on demand) services -- MX Player and Amazon miniTV into one service -- Amazon MX Player," the statement said. Health ministry plans mandatory 'non-skippable' anti-tobacco spots on OTT

The Union health ministry has proposed mandatory display of "non-skippable" anti-tobacco health spots of at least 30 seconds and audio-visual disclaimer on ill-effects of tobacco use for 20 seconds on OTT platforms as soon as one starts streaming them. The ministry recently released draft amendments for anti-tobacco rules for over-the-top (OTT) platforms. According to the draft norms, all films of Indian and foreign origin irrespective of their CBFC certification status published and released on or after September 1, 2023 will have to display anti-tobacco health spots of minimum 30 seconds duration each at the beginning and middle of the movie. It also proposed displaying anti-tobacco health warnings as prominent static messages at the bottom of the screen during the scenes that show use of tobacco products in all content. Ultra Media announces Rs 500 cr investment, launches 2 OTT platforms

Ultra Media & Entertainment Group on Thursday announced a Rs 500 crore investment to drive its growth and expand the content portfolio. As part of the growth strategy, the content production and distribution group launched two new over-the-top (OTT) platforms, Ultra Play and Ultra Gaane, the company said in a statement. The Rs 500 crore "strategic financial commitment will support the launch and expansion of two OTT platforms Ultra Play and Ultra Gaane alongside enhancing the existing Marathi platform, Ultra Jhakaas", the statement said. "The investment is a key component of Ultra Media & Entertainment Group's five-year growth plan. The allocation includes Rs 250 crore dedicated to content acquisition, ensuring a robust and diverse library across all platforms," it added. Telco operators ask Trai to bring OTT apps under licensing framework

Telecom operators, in their latest submission to sector regulator Trai, have unanimously demanded to bring over-the-top apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram within the ambit of the licensing regime under the new Telecommunication Act. Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and industry body COAI -- in their comments on the consultation paper issued by Trai, seeking views on the framework for service authorisations to be granted under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 -- have said that the calling and messaging apps should be brought under services to be provided through authorisation. "As per our understanding, OTT Communication services are covered under the new Telecom Act as an access service," Telecom operators industry body COAI said in its submission to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). Jio Studios garners Rs 700 cr from box office, action-packed year ahead

Jio Studios, the media and content arm of Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, has garnered Rs 700 crore at the box office, according to the latest annual report of the oil-to-chemicals company. The company has an "action-packed year" with 11 theatre releases, 35 direct-to-digital releases and 8 original web series across languages and genres produced by the company, which is "the largest by any film studio" in 2023-24. These were released across theatres, OTT and broadcast platforms including Jio Cinema, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Colors and Star Network, it added. "With eight consecutive hits, Jio Studios' films garnered a whopping Rs 700 crore at the box office with every second film in Q4 FY2024 being a Jio Studios film," it said.
