The internet user base in India is set to cross 900 million this year, propelled by the growing use of Indic languages for digital content, according to a report by IAMAI and KANTAR. The 'Internet in India Report 2024,' reveals that the number of active internet users in India reached 886 million in 2024, a robust 8 per cent year-on-year growth. "The internet user base in India is set to surpass 900 million by 2025, driven by the growing use of Indic languages for digital content," according to the report. Rural India, with 488 million users, leads this growth and now accounts for 55 per cent of the total internet population. The report underpins the increasing role of Indic languages in shaping internet consumption patterns. Government blocked 18 OTT platforms this year for publishing obscene and vulgar content, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. In a reply to a question by Shiv Sena-UBT member Anil Desai, Murugan said the IT Rules of 2021 cast specific due diligence obligations on intermediaries to make reasonable efforts by themselves against displaying or spreading obscene or pornographic content. The Rules also provide for a Code of Ethics for publishers of news and current affairs on digital media and publishers of online curated content (OTT platforms). "The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries, and blocked 18 OTT platforms on 14th March, 2024 for publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content under these provisions," Murugan said. The government needs to enforce rules on the entry and exit of data from Indian telecom networks, including that of Over-The-Top (OTT) players, a senior official of the industry body COAI said on Thursday. While lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call on cyber security framework during the inaugural session of India Mobile Congress and ITU's WTSA, COAI Director General SP Kochhar said the government has to take lead in setting up standards for security and industry will support it. He said that the joint proposition of the government and industry can be taken up with the World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA). "Several elements which use telecom networks cannot be forced to comply with Indian law. We have been saying this but it is a necessity. To do that we have to enforce entry and exit of data as well as entities from Indian networks through technology.
