Goblin mode, Vax, Climate emergency: How Oxford picks 'Word of the year'

'Goblin mode', 'Vax', 'Climate Emergency', and 'Toxic' -- these are among the "Oxford Word of the year" chosen in the last five years. Ever wondered, how these words are picked? Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, elaborated the process in an interview with PTI from New York. "Each year, a team of lexicographers comes together from Oxford University Press to review the evidence and select the Oxford word of the year. In considering a word as a candidate for the word of the year, we look at various factors and analyse real language data. "Frequency of use is word of the key indicators that a word maybe a good candidate if it has a spike in usage that year, we then look and see what has been happening with that word and why did it experience such increased usage," he said. Oxford Dictionaries names 'goblin mode' word of the year via online vote

Asked to sum up 2022 in a word, the public has chosen a phrase. Oxford Dictionaries said Monday that goblin mode has been selected by online vote as its word of the year. It defines the term as a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations. First seen on Twitter in 2009, goblin mode gained popularity in 2022 as people around the world emerged uncertainly from pandemic lockdowns. Given the year we've just experienced, goblin mode' resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point, said Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl.
