Area under paddy is down 26 per cent to 26.55 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing kharif (summer-sown) season amid slow progress of the southwest monsoon. The paddy acreage stood at 36.05 lakh hectare in the corresponding period last year, according to the agriculture ministry data. Paddy is the main kharif crop, sowing of which normally starts with the onset of southwest monsoon. About 80 per cent of the country's total rice production comes from kharif season. Area under pulses is marginally less at 18.15 lakh hectare so far from 18.51 lakh hectare in the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement. Shri Anna-cum-coarse cereals acreage has risen at 36.23 lakh hectare so far as against 22.41 lakh hectare in the corresponding period last year. Area under oilseeds has increased at 21.55 lakh hectare from 18.81 lakh hectare.Cotton acreage is down at 40.49 lakh hectare so far from 47.04 lakh hectare last year. Haryana has been implementing proactive measures to transform paddy straw, which was once seen as an environmental hazard, into a valuable source to enhance farmers' income, Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal said on Thursday. These measures include the announcement of a common determined rate (CDR) of Rs 2,500 per metric tonne for paddy straw, as well as the continued provision of financial support for in-situ/ex-situ techniques and the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technique in paddy cultivation, he said. Additionally, Haryana has successfully reduced farm fires by about 40 per cent as compared to the previous year, Kaushal said. These efforts underscore Haryana's commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and its dedication to mitigate environmental challenges. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said the state government is fully prepared to provide uninterrupted power to farmers for paddy sowing. In a statement issued here, Mann said like the previous year, the state government has decided to commence sowing of paddy across the state in a phased manner. Sowing started from June 10 in some parts of the state. The remaining areas will be covered on June 16, 19 and 21, he said. Mann said the state has been divided into four zones to implement sowing mechanisms in an effective manner. In the first phase, transplantation in areas beyond the fence across the border started from June 10, the statement said. "From tomorrow, uninterrupted power will be ensured in the second phase to seven districts -- Ferozepur, Faridkot, Pathankot, Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, SBS Nagar and Tarn Taran," Mann said. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said that the state government is fully prepared to ensure smooth and hassle-free sowing of paddy crop during the upcoming kharif season across the state. According to an official statement here, the chief minister said that as per the suggestions received from farmers, the state government has decided to commence the sowing of paddy across the state in a phased manner. He said that the paddy sowing will begin on June 10, 16, 19 and 21 in different parts of the state. The state has been divided in four zones to implement this sowing mechanism. To ensure smooth irrigation in a staggered manner, the first phase will begin on June 10 with transplantation in the cultivable land near the international border areas. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday assured farmers that the state government would procure every grain of paddy damaged due to unseasonal rains witnessed over the last few days. He told the farmers not to worry about paddy that got wet due to the rains. The Chief Minister made it clear that the state government would pay equal price to the damaged paddy as it is paid for normal ones during the procurement process, an official release said. Rao, who held a meeting with ministers and officials, directed the agriculture department to study what policies should be adopted in future so that 'yasangi' (summer) paddy harvesting can be completed before March in view of the unseasonal rains. He asked the department to take appropriate measures to sensitise the farmers in this direction. The Chief Minister also suggested to the farmers to postpone harvesting for another three to four days in view of rains continuing in the state, it said.
The area under paddy cultivation through the direct seeding of rice (DSR) technique will be increased to two lakh acres in Haryana. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday said that the area under direct seeding will be increased from 73,000 acres to nearly 2 lakh acres. "This will save 218 MCM (million cubic metres) of water. For this, provision will be made for availability of machinery and subsidy," he added. Khattar also said that in the next two years, 50 per cent of the demand for water in the agriculture sector would be met by the treated wastewater of sewage treatment plants. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said he has formed a committee under the chief secretary to look at alternative crops that require less water compared to paddy. Mann said sowing of the paddy crop over the years has led to several problems including depletion of underground water table and issues related to stubble burning. He said he has formed a committee under the chief secretary which will meet farmers in different villages and see which crops consume less water and bring more income to farmers as a replacement of paddy. Procurement of wheat and paddy in quantity and value terms has risen significantly in the last eight years, on account of a hike in the minimum support price (MSP) and purchases made from more states, a senior food ministry official said on Tuesday. The number of farmers covered under the MSP operations has also increased because of the higher quantity of wheat and paddy procurement by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency for the procurement and distribution of foodgrains. "The central procurement of wheat and paddy has increased substantially between the 2013-14 and 2021-22 marketing seasons. The procurement has become broad-based and we are purchasing grains from more states now. MSP has increased significantly," said Subodh Singh, additional secretary in the food ministry. Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Telangana were the top contributors to the central pool. Normally, paddy procurement begins from October. However, in southern states, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, it begins from September.
