BJP team meets injured workers in Patna, seeks inquiry into police action

The BJP on Saturday asserted that the state-sponsored and brutal police action on its procession in the Bihar capital earlier this week warranted a judicial inquiry and intervention of the National Human Rights Commission. A four-member fact-finding team constituted by BJP national president J P Nadda stated this here, as it met several party activists, who sustained injuries in the police action on June 13 and are undergoing treatment at hospitals. The team members also include former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das and Members of Parliament Manoj Tiwari, Sunita Duggal and Vishnu Dayal Ram. Duggal alleged that women BJP workers were hit with lathis on their chests and heads by male police personnel on Thursday when the party was staging a Vidhan Sabha march in protest against the Nitish Kumar government's teacher recruitment policy. Tiwari, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Delhi, but has his roots in Bihar, claimed 771 BJP workers were injured in the incident and some of them were

Cooperatives NCCF and NAFED on Friday started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of Rs 90 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Patna in a bid to provide relief to consumers amid high prices of the key kitchen staple. Since last few weeks, the retail price of tomatoes has risen sharply and was ruling as high as Rs 244 per kg on Friday in several parts of the country owing to the lean season plus heavy rains. "About 80 per cent of 17,000 kg tomatoes were sold till evening. We will increase the reach and the quantity from tomorrow onwards in Delhi-NCR," NCCF Managing Director Anice Joseph Chandra told PTI. The response was good and in some places, there was a queue for buying the discounted tomatoes, she said. BJP constitutes committee to probe use of police on its leaders in Patna

The BJP on Friday constituted a four-member committee of party MPs to probe the Bihar Police's alleged use of excessive force on its leaders during a protest march. The BJP has alleged that one of its members, Vijay Singh, lost his life and many have been injured in the police lathi charge on Thursday. Former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das will be the convenor of the "high-level probe committee" and Vishnu Dayal Ram, Manoj Tiwari and Sunita Duggal will be its other members, the party said in a statement. Noting that BJP president J P Nadda has strongly condemned the police's "barbarity" and the state government's "dictatorial" mindset, it said the committee will soon visit Patna and submit its report to party's national president J P Nadda. The BJP earlier said the death of its Jehanabad district general secretary Vijay Singh, allegedly in a police lathi charge, in Patna was "a pre-planned conspiracy" of the Nitish Kumar government to stop people of the state from demanding

The demonstration is being staged without any permission from the administration. We are trying to explain to the protesters that what they are doing is illegal. Use of force has been a last resort," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Law and Order, Patna, Nurul Haq, told reporters. Asked about the number of people, both men and women, who have been taken into custody, the Deputy SP said, "At present, we are not in a position to give the figures. PM's remarks on opposition reflect panic of BJP following Patna meet: TMC

The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that his comments on the opposition reflect the panic that has gripped the saffron camp after the non-BJP parties' successful meeting in Patna last week. While addressing a gathering of party workers in Bhopal on Tuesday, Modi attacked opposition parties over corruption, terming their Patna conclave as a mere "photo-op". Last week, leaders of over a dozen parties, some of them from far-off Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu, and several bitter rivals like the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Trinamool Congress, and the Left, attended the conclave hosted by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and agreed to build on the momentum at the next meeting proposed in Shimla in July. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "We have heard Prime Minister Narendra Modi talking about the opposition camp. A panic has set in in the BJP camp after the successful opposition meeting in Patna, as it can sense imminent defeat. The PM

Oppn leaders have pledged to defeat Fascist forces: Tejashwi Yadav

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday said "leaders from Kanyakumari to Kashmir" have pledged to defeat "Fascist forces" at the meeting of opposition parties hosted here by his boss Nitish Kumar. Talking to reporters a day after the meeting that has hogged much limelight, Yadav also downplayed the notes of discord emanating from the Aam Aadmi Party's controversial allegations against the Congress. "There were no problems at the meeting. Every issue came up for discussion in an amicable way", asserted Yadav, who attended the meeting as a representative of the RJD, along with his father and party supremo Lalu Prasad. AAP delegates led by its founder Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi CM, had skipped the press briefing held after the meeting and come out with a statement alleging that Congress "refused" to oppose the Centre's "black ordinance" that left the city government with little power over its bureaucracy. Yadav also rubbished the charge by Union Home Minister Amit Shah
