PCB scotches speculation of discord, infighting in Pakistan's cricket team

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday rubbished reports of discord and infighting in the national team, competing in the World Cup in India. In a press release, the PCB strongly denied recent speculations about any internal discord in the Babar Azam-led side. The PCB has been forced to act after increasing rumours about disunity in the team. Some Pakistani journalists have posted on social media about the alleged fights in the team and promised to reveal more details after the match against Afghanistan on Monday. According to those posts, two players got into a physical altercation and there has been growing discord in the team with captain Babar facing isolation from a group of players. "Contrary to rumours circulated by a certain section of the media, the PCB unequivocally assures that the team is cohesive and there is no evidence to support these unsubstantiated claims," the release said. The PCB said it is disappointed by the dissemination of false news. Pakistan won the thei

PCB media manager Umar Kalson under scanner for visiting Colombo casino

Pakistan team's current media manager Umar Farooq Kalson and board's GM (International Cricket) Adnan Ali are under scanner after pictures and video footages emerged of the duo visiting a Colombo casino. Both are in Colombo in official capacity as a part of the Pakistani contingent for the ongoing Asia Cup and visiting a gambling den is sure to attract attention of ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit as it is one of the prohibited places as per code of conduct. Many Pakistani fans on social media questioned how officials of the PCB could be so "immature" and "careless" as to indulge in gambling. Many criticised the trend of many PCB officials going on to Colombo during the Asia Cup on official visits. A PCB source said that at least 15-20 PCB officials had travelled o and fro between Colombo and Lahore while some were stationed there permanently as Pakistan was the official host of the Asia Cup. After some Pakistani news channels ran headlines, the two officials in the Casino later clarifi

Asia Cup: Deadlock over PCB's new contracts, players want more freedom

The deadlock between the Pakistan Cricket Board and the national team players over the signing of new central contracts is yet to be resolved ahead of the all-important Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. A well-informed insider in the board on Saturday confirmed that there were still a number of issues to be sorted out and at one stage senior pacer, Shaheen Shah Afridi had refused to sign the new central contract after the PCB denied him an NOC for the Emirates T20 International League. Shaheen got so frustrated at the board's refusal to issue him an NOC that he made it clear it would be best if he didn't sign any contract with the board and played as a freelancer, the insider said. The board then averted a similar situation with some other players by agreeing to issue NOCs for the Emirates League to be held in January-February. Shaheen has secured an USD 400,000 contract for two or three years and an additional USD 150,000 for the league by marketing his NFTs online. The insider

Wasim Akram asks PCB to delete commemorative video clip without Imran Khan

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram on Wednesday asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to delete and apologise to fans for making a commemorative video clip without featuring Imran Khan, the 1992 World Cup winning captain. On August 14, the PCB shared a video clip celebrating the best moments of Pakistan cricket and the crowning moment was understandably the World Cup victory 31 years ago. But Imran, who led that team, was not to be seen anywhere in that clip which ran for 2 minutes and 21 seconds. Akram, who played a vital role in that triumph, expressed his dismay over omitting his fast bowling mentor from the video. After long flights and hours of transit before reaching Sri Lanka, I got the shock of my life when I watched PCB's short clip on the history of Pakistan cricket minus the great Imran Khan. Political differences apart but Imran Khan is an icon of world cricket and developed Pakistan into a strong unit in his time and gave us a pathwayPCB should delete the video and apolog

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan appoints sports psychologist Maqbool Babri

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed sports psychologist Dr Maqbool Babri to counsel the men's team during ODI series against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka followed by the high-profile Asia Cup before the marquee World Cup comes calling. "Yes, Dr Maqbool Babri who has worked in the past with counselling of some of our players will be accompanying the squad," a PCB source said. He said the board wanted to facilitate the players in every way possible so that they were able to focus completely on their cricket and matches. Babri has in the past also worked with some players helping them understand how to handle pressure situations and get through bad performances and personal issues. A source in the PCB said that Babri was being sent with the team so that the players can always have a qualified psychologist to sit down with and discuss any issues instead of bottling up their feelings. The PCB announced on Sunday that a pre-Sri Lanka departure camp for the players in Pakistan wil

Inzamam set to take over as Pakistan team chief selector, says PCB source

Former Test captain Inzamam-ul-Haq is set to take over as Pakistan team chief selector even as director Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn will know by next week whether they will remain part of the national selection committee. A source in the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that Inzamam has given his consent to becoming a paid chief selector again after he held the position between 2016 and 2019. The Cricket Technical Committee members including Misbah ul Haq, Inzamam and Muhammad Hafeez have been discussing the new selection committee and it is yet to be decided whether Arthur and Bradburn should remain members on it, the source told PTI. He said Misbah would make his recommendation to the board chairman Zaka Ashraf after taking point of view of captain Babar Azam on whether the experiment of having the team director and head coach on the selection panel has been beneficial for the team. Once Babar's views are taken, the Cricket Technical Committee will also finalize i

PCB's Ashraf to push for Pak's WC matches at neutral venues in ICC meeting

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) acting chairman Zaka Ashraf will push for the country's ODI World Cup matches at neutral venues at the ICC meetings in Durban this week, the Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports), Ahsan Mazari, has said. "Zaka Ashraf will bring up the issue of why can't Pakistan's matches in the World Cup be played at neutral venues when the Indian team can't travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup," he said. India has refused to play its Asia Cup matches in Pakistan owing to geopolitical tensions, and after months of speculation around the continental tournament, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that the event will be staged in a hybrid model with four games in Pakistan and nine in Sri Lanka from August 31 to September 17. However, the PCB recently conveyed to the ICC and the BCCI that the national team's participation in the World Cup is subject to government clearance due to the tense relations between the two countries. PCB seeks clearance to travel to India for WC, writes to Pak PM: Report

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, seeking official clearance to travel to India for the ODI World Cup in October-November, according to a report. In the letter, also addressed to the interior and the foreign ministry, the PCB has asked for advice on whether the national team is allowed to travel to India, and if so, if there are any reservations about any of the five venues for the Pakistan games, according to 'Espncricinfo.com'. "Soon after the World Cup schedule was announced last Tuesday, we wrote to our Patron, Honourable Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, through the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry, copying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior, requesting clearance to participate in the World Cup," the PCB told the website. "The decision to visit India and approve venues at which we can play our matches is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan. We have absolute trust in the judgment of ou

PCB chairman election faces delay as two former members approach court

The process to elect the new Pakistan Cricket Board chairman might be delayed with two members of the former management committee approaching the Lahore High Court. The Lahore High Court will on Monday head two petitions filed by former PCB management committee members Shakil Sheikh and Gul Zada against the election process to bring in Zaka Ashraf as the chairman and the legality of the Board of Governors which will elect the new chief. The petitioners have requested the honourable judge to stay the elections of the chairman and suspend the BOG until it gives a verdict on their petitions. It is a tricky situation because the election commissioner and acting Chairman of the board has set June 27 as the date for holding election for new Chairman after the changes made to the Board of Governors, one source in the board said. Ironically, when Ashraf had become PCB chairman way back in 2012, he had faced similar legal challenges from his predecessor, Najam Sethi, and was even ordered to

Mickey Arthur rejects offer to return as Pakistan national team coach

Mickey Arthur has spurned an offer from the PCB to return as the head coach of the national team, forcing the board to continue its search to find a replacement for incumbent Saqlain Mushtaq. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Tuesday said it was in discussions with Arthur for a new stint as head coach but the South African won't be able to take up the role right away as he has a long-term contract with Derbyshire. "Owing to his long-term contract with Derbyshire, we have also discussed a proposal to act as a consultant to the PCB on a time-sharing basis with Derbyshire," PCB said in a statement. "Unfortunately, however, this option is proving difficult to materialise for various reasons on both sides. "Under the circumstances, the PCB will continue its search for the right person to fit the slot of the national team head coach and some top names are already under consideration." A highly well-placed source in the board told PTI that Arthur is not coming because of the unreliable ...

Shaheen Afridi is 90% ready for T20 World Cup: PCB Chairman Raja

Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi is 90 per cent ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup but his availability will depend on how he plays in the two warm-up games in Australia, PCB chairman Ramiz Raja said. The 22-year-old Afridi is set to join the national team in Australia on Saturday after completing his rehabilitation programme for a knee injury under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Committee. He will be available for selection for the warm-up games against England and Afghanistan on October 17 and 19 respectively. "I have spoken to him we are in touch with his doctors and the feedback we have got is he is 90 percent ready," Raja said. "But knee injuries can be delicate and technical and we have to see if he feels any soreness after playing the warm-up games. On his part he says he is ready and I think we are also ready." Pakistan will begin their campaign against India on Oct 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. "I will say this that the mechanics of the Wo

PCB hires Matthew Hayden as mentor of Pakistan team for World Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has rehired Australian batting great Matthew Hayden as team mentor for the ICC World T20 Cup in Australia. Hayden expressed confidence that Pakistan team, with its set of strong players, will light up the mega event, set to unfold next month. Hayden had done a stint with the Pakistan team during last year's World T20 Cup in UAE and saw Pakistan being beaten by Australia in the semi-finals. The PCB said that Hayden will join the side in Brisbane on October 15, the day Pakistan arrive from Christchurch after competing in the T20I series also involving Bangladesh and hosts New Zealand. The PCB had also hired South Africa's Vernon Philander for the last World Cup as bowling consultant. The PCB said the decision is a continuation of Hayden's involvement with the national men's side after he inspired them to the semifinals of the last World Cup.
