13 arrested accused booked under Pocso Act in JU ragging death case

All 13 people arrested in the ragging-death of a 17-year-old undergraduate student of Jadavpur University were booked under POCSO Act, police said. The accused were booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) as the boy was allegedly paraded naked on the second floor of the main hostel before he jumped off the balcony on August 9, they said. The homicide department of the Kolkata Police formed a special investigating team (SIT) to probe the death. "The case will now be investigated by the homicide department of the Kolkata Police. They have already taken over the probe. And since the deceased was a juvenile, we have booked all the 13 arrested accused under the POCSO Act," a police officer said on Friday. The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) had earlier insisted that the accused be booked under POCSO Act. Isro team visits Jadavpur University, takes stock of campus security

A team of the ISRO visited the Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Wednesday and took stock of the security measures on the campus. The visit came after Governor CV Ananda Bose, who is also the chancellor of the university, wrote to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to suggest security measures following the death of a first-year undergraduate student allegedly due to ragging. The two members of the team visited different parts of the campus and the buildings, and discussed the security-related issues with varsity officials, JU's officiating vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau told PTI. "They deliberated on beefing up security with the use of remote sensing technology. IIT Mandi takes disciplinary action against 72 students for ragging juniors

IIT Mandi has suspended 10 students and taken disciplinary action against 62 others for allegedly ragging their juniors during an event at the institute, officials said on Wednesday. "Recently, an incident of ragging came to the institute's notice. It was found that some B. Tech students were involved in ragging freshers. Disciplinary action is being taken against 72 students involved in the incident," a statement issued here by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi said. IIT Mandi is committed to ensuring that all students on campus feel safe and are not exposed to any form of harassment. Bengal governor approaches Isro for tech to curb ragging on campuses

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has reached out to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for identifying an appropriate technology solution to curb the menace of ragging on college and university campuses, a statement issued by Raj Bhavan on Thursday night said. A first-year undergraduate student died earlier this month after allegedly being ragged and sexually harassed in a hostel of Jadavpur University, sparking an outcry in West Bengal. "C V Ananda Bose, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the universities, contacted the Chairman of ISRO for identifying appropriate technology to effectively contain and eliminate the menace of ragging in the university campuses," the statement said. FIR lodged against nine people in Assam's JB College ragging case

A case has been lodged against nine people, including eight present students, by a premier college in Assam's Jorhat district on allegations of ragging raised by a junior hostel inmate, a police officer said on Friday. The police have started an investigation though no arrests have been made thus far, he said. The principal of Jagannath Barooah (JB) College had filed a complaint at Jorhat Police Station on Thursday against the nine accused based on a written submission from the aggrieved student.
