Ranji Trophy Preview: Veterans, young hopefuls embark on a fresh journey

Bright dreams of a new journey, desperation to stage a comeback and desire to rediscover old glory will be the dominant themes of this season's Ranji Trophy that begins at various centres across the country from Friday. On the periphery, the latest edition of the premier domestic competition might appear to be having little or no say in the cricketing fortunes of a clutch of players, especially with India's batting and bowling line-ups almost sealed in Tests. The selectors also might not ring in too many changes for the five-match home rubber against England later this month. Also India will play the red-ball format only in September at home against Bangladesh, courtesy an avalanche of white-ball matches, including the IPL and the T20 World Cup in June. So, it might seem like there is zero incentive to toil in some remote grounds across the country over the next month and thereabouts. But in reality, a whole lot more is bubbling beneath that seemingly staid surface of insignificance

Young Yash Dhull has once again being named captain with Ayush Badoni as his deputy as Delhi on Thursday announced a 26-member squad for the opening two fixtures of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament beginning on January 5. Ranji Trophy 2023-24: Mayank Agarwal to lead Karnataka in first two matches

Experienced opener Mayank Agarwal was on Wednesday named as Karnataka captain for the first two matches of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. The promising young batsman Nikin Jose has been appointed as Agarwal's deputy. However, KL Rahul has not been named in the 16-man squad considering India's upcoming assignments at home against Afghanistan (three T20Is) and England (five Tests) across January and February. Karnataka will open their Ranji campaign against Punjab at Hubli from January 5-8 and in their second match, the former champions will face Gujarat in Ahmedabad from January 12-15. Delhi cricket: Dhruv Shorey leaves, joins Vidarbha; Nitish Rana seeks NOC

There seems to be no end to troubles for Delhi cricket as former skipper Nitish Rana and last year's top run-getter in Ranji Trophy Dhruv Shorey have decided to ply their trade for other states in order to play all three formats in the next domestic season. A lot of people in DDCA are still unaware that Shorey, a red ball specialist has already signed contract with Vidarbha Cricket Association as a professional which will obviously help him earn over and above his match fee. "Yes, Dhruv (Shorey) has already signed a contract with us and he along with former Test batter Karun Nair will play for Vidarbha during the upcoming domestic season," a VCA official confirmed the development. As far as Rana is concerned, there are rumours about him joining Baroda or Haryana but there has been no confirmation on that front. The development was confirmed by DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda on Friday and it seems that there will be a last ditch attempt to stop Rana. "Yes, it is true that bot

Manoj Tiwary reverses retirement to give 'one more try' to win Ranji Trophy

Less than a week after he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, former India batter Manoj Tiwary on Tuesday said he has decided to reverse his decision and wants to give "one more try" to win the elusive Ranji Trophy title with Bengal. Two-time champions Bengal have reached the Ranji final twice in the last three seasons, but they are yet to replicate the success of 1989-90. The Tiwary-led Bengal were overwhelming favourites to win the title at home last season, but Saurashtra defeated them by nine wickets in a repeat of the outcome of the 2019-20 season's final. "It was a proud moment for me to captain Bengal to the final last season. I want to give it one more try before leaving," Tiwary told a media conference at the Eden Gardens. "I'm coming out of retirement for one last year. Bengal cricket has given me everything. I want to give it a last try, be it as a player or captain. "Next year, there will not be any more U-turn. I want to give one more year to Bengal ..

Saurashtra beat Bengal by nine wickets in Ranji final, clinch second title

Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat returned a match haul of nine wickets, including 6/85 in the second innings, as Saurashtra thrashed Bengal by nine wickets in the summit clash to clinch their second Ranji Trophy title here on Sunday. Having given away a big first innings lead of 230 runs, Bengal, who were overnight 169/4 in their second essay, folded for 241, handing the visitors a mere 12 runs target to win the final. Saurashtra lost their opening batter Jay Gohil (0) off the bowling of Akash Deep but eventually went past the target, reaching 14 for 1 in 2.4 overs, to wrap up the match with one day and two full sessions to spare. Saurashtra's earlier triumph was in 2019-20 season when they defeated Bengal on the basis of first innings lead. In the last 10 seasons, they have made the final on five occasions, underlining their consistency. A Ranji Trophy title eluded Bengal yet again. They last won it in 1998-90 when they defeated a star-studded Delhi at the same Eden Gardens. Their fi
