Quality workforce, investment in R&D essential to become 'developed nation'

To bolster its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, India needs to substantially increase the size of its quality workforce and investment in R&D in science and technology, including by the private sector, a top Indian official has said. In an interview with PTI on the sidelines of the PANIIT 2024 meeting in a Maryland suburb of Washington DC, Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, said that one of the key challenges that India has is shortage of trained manpower in R&D sector and "that requires to be enhanced substantially. Hindustan Aeronautics spending over Rs 2,000 crore this year on R&D

India's aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is spending over Rs 2,000 crore this year on research and development in line with its overall approach towards indigenisation of critical avionics and related hardware, a senior official of the state-run entity said on Wednesday. The HAL will showcase its rich legacy in the design, development and production of a diverse range of avionics systems at an expo in Delhi on December 7 and 8. "We are spending over Rs 2,000 crore this year on R&D," said Dr D K Sunil, Director of Engineering and R&D at the HAL. Over the last few decades, the HAL has developed a number of military aircraft and helicopters including the Tejas Light Combat jet and Prachand Light Combat Helicopters. "We wanted to showcase what we are doing towards 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence. The HAL has been doing it over a period of time," said Sunil. New SATHI centres after approval from competent authority, says govt

The government on Monday said it will announce new centres to house major analytical instruments for sharing them with research institutions after approval from the competent authority. The recommendations of the empowered committee, chaired by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan, to examine 12 proposals to identify Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institutes (SATHI), are under the consideration of Ministry of Science and Technology, officials in the ministry said. "The recommendations of the expert committee meeting held in Noida for the proposals received for the SATHI scheme are being processed. They will be announced after approval of competent authority," the Department of Science and Technology (DST) posted on X. The DST said it was also reviewing the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facilities (SAIF) programme, a separate scheme with a history of five decades. EU govts increased R&D budget allocations by 5% to euro 117.4 mn in 2022

In 2022, the total government budget allocations for R & D (GBARD) across the EU stood at Euro 117.4 million, equivalent to 0.74 per cent of the GDP. This was a 5.4 per cent increase compared with 2021 (Euro 111 393 million) and a 49.2 per cent increase compared with 2012 (Euro 78 656 million).Data on government budget allocations for R & D (GBARD) published by Eurostat today showed that in 2022, government budget allocations for R & D at the EU level stood at Euro 262.7 per person, a 47.2 per cent increase compared with 2012 (Euro 178.5 per person). Cabinet assent to set up National Research Foundation to boost R&D

The government on Wednesday approved a bill to set up the National Research Foundation, a new funding agency to bolster the country's research competence, Union minister Anurag Thakur said. He said the National Research Foundation Bill will be brought in Parliament and the Science and Engineering Research Board Act, 2008 will be repealed. At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to introduce the National Research Foundation (NRF) Bill, 2023, Thakur told reporters here. The NRF will be governed by a governing board consisting of 15 to 25 eminent researchers and professionals. The governing board will be headed by the prime minister, he noted.
