We will think of scrapping reservation when India is a fair place: Rahul

The Congress Party will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place, which is not the case right now, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition has said. Gandhi made these remarks while talking to students at the prestigious Georgetown University. We will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place. And India is not a fair place, Gandhi told students at the university here in response to a question on reservation and how long it would continue. When you look at the financial numbers, then tribals get 10 paise out of 100 rupees; Dalits get 5 rupees out of 100 rupees, and OBCs get a similar number. The fact of the matter is that they're not getting participation," Gandhi said. "The problem is that 90 per cent of India is not able to play. Go through the list of every single business leader in India. I've done it. Show me the tribal name. Show me the Dalit name. Show me the OBC name. Out of the top 200, I think there's one OBC. They're 50 per cent of India. But

BJP has adopted anti-SC,ST stance, INDIA bloc silent on issue: Mayawati

BSP chief Mayawati on Friday attacked the BJP and the INDIA bloc, alleging that while the ruling party has adopted an anti-SC/ST stance over the issue of sub-classification and identifying creamy layer for reservation within the communities, the opposition coalition's silence on the matter is proving to be "fatal". Earlier this month, a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud ruled in a 6:1 majority judgement that state governments were permitted to sub-classify communities within the SC list based on empirical data. Supreme Court judge Justice B R Gavai had also said states must evolve a policy for identifying the creamy layer, even among the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Schedule Tribes (ST), and deny it the benefit of reservation. In posts on X in Hindi, BSahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati said, "It is very sad and worrying that the (BJP-led) Centre has not yet taken any concrete steps to restore the old system as per public expectations

Lateral entry into bureaucracy is a direct assault on social justice and it deprived opportunities deserved for meritorious and minority officers from the reserved categories, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Tuesday. He called upon the Central government to halt this practice, and instead prioritise filling backlog vacancies for OBCs, SC/STs, and ensure fair and equitable promotions. In order to uphold social justice, safeguard reservation and ensure its rightful implementation, the following steps must be taken immediately, he said. Manmohan, Montek came through lateral entry: Law minister reminds Gandhi

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Monday hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his claim that the government was trying to bypass the reservation system through lateral entry, reminding the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha that former prime minister Manmohan Singh was made the finance secretary in 1976 through the lateral entry route. The minister also dismissed as "baseless" Gandhi's allegation that RSS people will be hired as public servants through this mode and pointed out that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made the system of lateral entry methodical by giving the mandate to UPSC for framing rules. Earlier, he pointed out, there was no formal system in place for such entry into governance. "Whatever appointments or recruitments or selections are to be done, UPSC will do it. Where is the issue of BJP, RSS in this? Baseless allegations are being made," Meghwal told PTI Videos in Bikaner. He said that RSS is an organisation that promotes cultural nationalism. Quota must in govt appointments: Chirag Paswan over lateral entry debate

BJP ally and Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Monday slammed any move for appointments in government positions without following reservations and asserted that he would raise the issue with the Centre. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president's reaction came over the recent advertisement to fill posts through lateral entry on a contract basis that the opposition has alleged snatches away reservations for the disadvantaged communities. "Reservation provisions must be there in any government appointment. There is no ifs and buts in this. No reservation exists in the private sector and if it is not implemented in government positions as well... The information came up before me on Sunday and it is a matter of concern for me," he told PTI. Paswan said as a member of the government, he has the platform to raise the issue and he would. The Union minister also said that as far as his party is concerned, it is absolutely not in support of such a measure. The Union Public Service ...

BJP always tries to weaken reservation fight, says SP chief Akhilesh

SP president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday attacked the ruling BJP amid the controversy over sub-classification and creamy layer in SC-ST reservation and alleged the BJP government always tries to weaken the fight for reservation through its vague statements and lawsuits. Yadav wrote on 'X' in Hindi, "The main objective of any kind of reservation should be the empowerment of the neglected society, not the division or disintegration of that society, this violates the basic principle of reservation itself." The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister was apparently referring to the recent Supreme Court judgment allowing sub-classifications within the Scheduled Castes (SCs). "The discrimination and unequal opportunities that have been going on for countless generations cannot be bridged by the changes that have come in a few generations," he said in the same post. "'Reservation' is the constitutional way to empower and strengthen the exploited, deprived society, this is what will bring about .

BJP leader challenges Jarange to field 288 Maratha candidates in polls

After activist Manoj Jarange asked the Marathas to prepare for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, BJP leader and former Union Minister Raosaheb Danve challenged him to field 288 Maratha candidates in the polls if he was not satisfied with the reservation granted to his community. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday evening, he said the state government has already provided 10 per cent reservation to the Maratha community. "As per the law, we have given the reservation. But if Jarange is not satisfied, he should field his own candidates in all 288 assembly constituencies in the state," Danve said. Speaking at his native Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district on Tuesday, Jarange asked the Maratha community to get ready to contest the upcoming assembly polls, saying it has no option but to get political power if it wants reservation in government jobs and education. Expressing confidence that Marathas would come to power in the state after the elections due in ...

Bring reservation in fourth-class jobs in private sector: Anupriya Patel

Union Minister Anupriya Patel on Sunday reiterated her demand of implementing reservation in fourth-class jobs in the private sector. "Reservation is not followed in appointments done in fourth-class posts via outsourcing in the private sector. The people of deprived sections used to get fourth-class jobs. When recruitment on these posts are done through outsourcing, no reservation law is followed," Patel said while talking to reporters. "Our party wants reservation should be followed in all the appointments in fourth-class jobs through outsourcing in the private sector," she said. On Uttar Pradesh Nazul Property (Management and use of public purposes) Bill, 2024 presented by the state government, Patel said it was "unnecessary". "It has already been sent to the Select Committee by the Upper House. The committee will look into it and give its recommendation. Tensions rise in Bangladesh as students reject PM's call for dialogue

Tension gripped Bangladesh afresh on Saturday after leaders of the student movement refused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation for talks while protesters laid siege on major streets in the capital, days after more than 200 people died in anti-quota protests. Bangladesh recently witnessed violent clashes between the police and mostly student protesters demanding an end to a controversial quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971. Witnesses said students protesting blocked major roads of Dhaka causing traffic snarls while officials said security forces were ordered to keep intensified vigil as protesters started rallying at different city points. On Friday, Prime Minister Hasina urged the agitating students to meet at her Ganabhaban official residence for talks to end the violence over the quota system in government jobs. Her call came a day after new protests erupted on Friday, ..
