Sea level rise could sink major parts of world's largest deltas: Study

Relative sea level rise, caused by local drivers, together with global sea level rise, could cause significant parts of the world's largest deltas to fall below the rising sea before the turn of the century, according to a new study. Relative sea level rise also takes into account sinking lands which amplify the effect of rising seas. Local drivers such as groundwater pumping and extraction of hydrocarbons creates subsidence, and coastal vegetation, which can provide some protection, is lost to make space for farmland and tourism. Scientists of the Stanford University-led study have found overwhelming evidence that it is not sea level rise, rather sinking land, that puts global deltas most at risk. While climate change is increasingly recognized as a risk to coastal livelihoods and global wealth and security, this is only one part of the story. This is of great importance for managing river deltas, according to Rafael Schmitt, lead author of the study, a lead scientist with the ..

Chennai, Kolkata, in India, at particular risk due to sea level rise: Study

Sea level rise this century may disproportionately affect certain Asian megacities as well as western tropical Pacific islands and the western Indian Ocean, according to a new research. The research team identified several Asian megacities that may face especially significant risks by 2100 if society continued to emit high levels of greenhouse gases: Chennai, Kolkata, Yangon, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and Manila. The study looked at the effects of natural sea level fluctuations on the projected rise due to climate change, it said. It did so by mapping sea level hotspots around the globe. The study is published in the journal Nature Climate Change. Scientists have long known that sea levels will rise with increasing ocean temperatures, largely because water expands when it warms and melting ice sheets release more water into the oceans. Studies have also indicated that sea level rise will vary regionally because shifts in ocean currents will likely direct more water to certain ..

South China Sea level has risen by 150 mm since 1900, reveals study

South China Sea's sea level has risen by 150 mm since 1900, according to researchers from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. The study, carried out by the researchers under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and other institutions in the country, focused on Porites coral, a wide-spread coral in the South China Sea with a high growth rate, clear annual growth layer and sensitive response to the change of seawater environment, Xinhua News Agency reported. The researchers analyzed the correlation mechanism between the oxygen stable isotopes of Porites coral and sea level, sea surface salinity, sea surface temperature and rainfall of the South China Sea, and reconstructed the sea level record at an annual resolution. The study showed that the sea level fell by 0.73 mm per year from 1850 to 1900, and then rose by 1.31 mm per year from 1900 to 2015. The sea-level rise in the South China Sea has accelerated, rising by 3.75 mm per year since 1993, Xinhua reported. The study found ...
