The incident occurred when the bus was proceeding to Udupi in neighbouring Karnataka from Thiruvananthapuram. "The driver might have dozed off at the wheel. It was a slope and the bus went down after losing control," a police officer said. The deceased man got trapped beneath the vehicle and his life could not be saved though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, they added.

Preliminary reports suggest that the bus overturned while overtaking a vehicle in Kanina town. Asked about reports suggesting that the driver was drunk, he said, "We have apprehended him and his medical examination is being conducted after which we will be able to properly establish whether he was actually drunk or not". Three persons were killed and 26 others injured when a bus carrying Special Armed Forces (SAF) jawans overturned after colliding with a car in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni district early on Saturday, police said. One of the jawans sustained serious injuries and has been referred to Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra, an official said. Eight people, including three children, were killed as their jeep collided head-on with a tractor in Bihar's Khagaria district on Monday morning, police said. Three people were also injured in the accident that took place around 5.15 am near a petrol pump on National Highway 31 in the Pasraha area, they said in a statement. Earlier, a senior police officer had said that nine people were killed and six persons were injured. "While seven people died on the spot, one more succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The three injured persons have been admitted to the Bhagalpur district hospital for better treatment," the statement said. West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar narrowly escaped injury when his car met with an accident on NH-34 in Shantipur, Nadia district, on Sunday, police said. Fourteen people were killed and 20 others injured when a pick-up vehicle overturned in Madhya Pradesh's Dindori district in the wee hours of Thursday, a police official said. The accident took place near Badjhar Ghat at around 1.30 am when the vehicle's driver lost control over the wheels. As a result, the vehicle overturned, killing 14 people and injuring 20 others, the official said. The victims had gone to Amhai Devri village to take part in a programme in the district's Shahpura block and were returning when the accident took place. Soon after getting information about the incident, Dindori collector and superintendent of police rushed to help the victims. Fatal accidents in the national capital were reduced by 15 per cent in January this year compared to the same month in 2023, officials said on Saturday. Measures to check the accidents, including spatial analysis of accident spots, has resulted in a reduction in both daytime and night-time crashes, an official statement released by Delhi Traffic Police stated. According to the official data, a total of 97 fatal accidents were reported this January, while the number was 114 last January. The city reported 322 "simple accidents" in January this year and 313 in the same month last year. In 2024, a total of 99 people died in the accidents and 394 got injured this year. The number of persons who lost their lives and got injured were 116 and 423 respectively in January 2023, the data showed. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday expressed concerns over poor quality of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) prepared by consultants for the construction of highways, saying that no good work has been done in this regard in the last 10 years. Addressing an event here, Gadkari said some officers of state-owned NHAI are responsible for bankruptcy of various infrastructure companies. "In the last 10 years, no good work had been done in preparation of DPRs... I am worried about the poor quality of DPRs prepared by consultants," the road transport and highways minister said. He added that it is regrettable that full payments are not made to DPR consultants by the government. Gadkari said the entire effort in the ministry is to float the tender for construction of highways, without focus on the quality. There is not a single highways project that does not have black spots, he added. Gadkari exhorted NHAI to hire competent people for DPR preparation for the construction of highways.
