Eight persons, including two children, were killed after a car and truck collided head-on near here on Sunday, police said. While the cause of the accident is being probed, four men and a woman, besides the two children were killed on the spot, Chengam town police said. The accident occurred on the Tiruvannamalai-Bengaluru highway and the occupants of the car were returning to the Karnataka capital after visiting a temple in Tamil Nadu. Another woman who was rushed to a government hospital succumbed to her injuries and in total, eight persons were killed, police added.

President Droupadi Murmu Sunday said she was deeply saddened by the deaths in a road accident in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. At least 12 people were killed and 23 injured when a mini-bus hit a container in the early hours of Sunday on Samruddhi Expressway in the district, formerly known as Aurangabad, police said. As many as 35 passengers were travelling in the private bus, an official said. Addressing an event organised by India chapter of International Road Federation (IRF), startup Netradyne's senior director Amit Kumar said e-vehicles on roads are more unsafe than conventional cars due to higher acceleration and additional weight of batteries. Netradyne is a startup that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) for driver safety. "Artificial Intelligence can help monitor driver behaviour, detect signs of fatigue, distraction, or impaired driving and provide warnings or take control of the vehicle to prevent accidents," Kumar said. Four persons were killed and two others injured after a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in collided with a truck in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred on the National Highway-30 near Barkheda village, some 40 kilometres from the district headquarters, around 1 am, an official said. "An SUV collided with a speeding truck, which was carrying iron rods and coming from the opposite direction," Bichhiya police station in-charge Dharmendra Singh Dhurve said. Six persons were travelling in the SUV, of whom four were killed on the spot while two others suffered injuries, he said. Three women and the driver of the SUV died in the incident, Dhurve said, adding that the injured are being treated at the district hospital in Mandla. Due to the impact of the collision, the truck also overturned. Its driver fled from the spot and efforts are on to trace him, he said.

Eleven people from Gujarat were killed and at least 15 injured when a trailer rammed into their bus from behind in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district early on Wednesday, police said. The bus was on its way from Gujarat to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh when the accident occurred around 4.30 am, they said. The bus had halted at Antra flyover in the Lakhanpur area when the trailer rammed into it from behind. Five men and six women died on the spot, the police said. According to the police control room, Antu, Nandram, Lallu, Bharat, Lalji, his wife Madhuben, Ambaben, Kambuben, Ramuben, Anjuben and Madhuben -- the wife of one Arvind -- died in the accident. They were from Dihor in Gujarat's Bhav Nagar.
Two dozen people were injured when a private tourist bus carrying over 60 pilgrims from Medinipur, West Bengal fell into a roadside ditch on the Bareilly-Lucknow national highway at Jang Bahadur Ganj (JB Ganj) bypass near Allipur village on Saturday morning, police said. A tractor-trolley fell into a drain near Redhibodki village in the Saharanpur district, leaving nine people dead, four of them children, police on Thursday said. The incident took place Wednesday evening in the Tajpura area when a tractor carrying around 50 devotees was on its way to Randaul village for a religious event, Superintendent of Police, City, Abhimanyu Manglik told PTI. On Wednesday, police recovered four bodies from the drain. The victims were identified as Sulochana, 58, Manglesh, 50, and Aditi and Arjun, both aged five and 12. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday condoled the death of nine Indian Army personnel in a road accident near Leh. Nine soldiers were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge, officials said. "Saddened by the loss of Indian Army personnel due to an accident near Leh in Ladakh. We will never forget their exemplary service to our nation," the defence minister said on 'X', formerly Twitter. "My thoughts are with the bereaved families. The injured personnel have been rushed to the Field Hospital. Praying for their speedy recovery," Singh said, without mentioning the number of soldiers killed and injured in the accident. Army officials said nine personnel lost their lives in the accident. The accident took place near Kiari in southern Ladakh's Nyoma, according to local officials.
The Himachal Pradesh government has released Rs 7.34 crore for the police to procure equipment and implement measures to reduce road accidents and deaths. Released by the transport department, the road safety fund will be utilised to procure traffic equipment and go a long way in meeting the target set by the United Nations to reduce accident deaths to 50 per cent by 2030, Director-General of Police Sanjay Kundu said on Saturday. The police will procure traffic lights for installation in Bijiri and Hamirpur and rescue equipment for the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane highway, he said. On an average, 1,180 people die each year in 3,090 accidents while 5,480 people suffer injuries, according to police records. Procurement of modern equipment for traffic regulation by the police is an ongoing process. Four passengers of a Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation bus were injured after it fell a few feet as a portion of the Mandi-Shimla highway caved in on Saturday, officials said. The bus with 12 passengers on board was on its way to Shimla from Mandi when a part of the road caved in near Kango in Mandi district in the early hours of Saturday, they said. The bus fell a few feet, landing on its tyres and was not buried in the debris, they added. Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation (HRTC) Managing Director Rohan Chand Thakur said the four injured passengers have been admitted to a hospital. According to State Emergency Operation Centre data, 107 people have died in road accidents in Himachal Pradesh during the monsoon season since June 24. The Shimla-Kalka and the Manali-Chandigarh national highways were blocked near Koti and Pandoh, respectively, following landslides triggered by intermittent rain. A total 395 roads are blocked in the state, officials said.

Four people were crushed by apple-laden trucks in two separate road incidents in Shimla, police said on Wednesday. Two people were crushed to death coming under a truck laden with apples in Chaila area of Shimla district, police said. The incident happened Tuesday evening when the truck from Narkanda was going outside the state taking the Rajgarh-Solan road. The truck, reportedly by mistake, veered towards Chaila market instead of the SainjRajgarh road and going out of control, hit four vehicles, turned turtle, and crushed two people, one of whom was a woman. According to preliminary investigations by police, a brake failure led to the accident. The bodies were extracted with the help of an excavator and sent for post mortem to the Civil Hospital in Theog, police said. A case has been registered and investigations are underway, they said. A school bus carrying teenage campers rolled over on a winding Idaho highway on Friday afternoon, injuring 11 people, the Idaho State Police said. Seven of those hurt had critical injuries and four had non-critical injuries, according to an ISP news release. The Boise County Coroner's office had not received any reports of fatalities as of 5:45 pm, coroner's investigator Noah Webster said. The bus was carrying about 30 campers and staff back to Boise from the Treasure Valley YMCA's camp at Horsethief Reservoir.
