At least eight people, including two children of the same family, were killed and 17 others injured when a passenger vehicle fell into a deep ravine in a mountainous terrain in northwest Pakistan, authorities said on Friday. The pick-up vehicle was carrying 25 passengers of the same family who were going to Chitral from Upper Dir. It plunged into a ravine at Kochhan Gol near Lowari Top on Thursday while negotiating a sharp turn, authorities said. According to Rescue 1122 officials, four of the injured are said to be in critical condition. Road accidents are common in Pakistan and are caused mainly due to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and unprofessional driving. Passenger vehicles are frequently crammed to capacity and seatbelts are not commonly worn, meaning high death tolls from single-vehicle accidents.
A minibus crash in northern Afghanistan killed 25 people, including nine children and 12 women, a police spokesman said Wednesday. The accident happened in a mountainous area with half-paved roads in Sar-e-Pul province as the passengers were returning from a wedding. They were traveling from one part of Sayyad district to another. Din Mohammad Nazari, the spokesman for the local police commander, blamed the minibus driver for the crash. He said the car fell into a deep pit because of his carelessness. Nazari did not say if there were any survivors. Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, mainly due to poor road conditions and carelessness of drivers on highways.
Road accidents in Gujarat decreased by 44 per cent in the last 10 years despite a rise in the number of vehicles, a state minister said on Wednesday. Gujarat Minister of State for Transport Harsh Sanghavi, who chaired a meeting of the Gujarat Road Safety Authority in Gandhinagar during the day, attributed this drop in the number of accidents to the efforts taken by the Gujarat Road Safety Authority in reducing the time taken for transporting the victims from the accident sites to nearby hospitals. During the meeting, Sanghavi informed the stakeholders that though the number of vehicles have increased since 2012, Gujarat has reported a decrease of 44 per cent in road accidents between 2012 and 2022, an official release said. A BSF personnel was killed and six injured when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, a police official said on Sunday. The accident occurred in the Balnoi area of Mendhar when the driver of the Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle lost control while negotiating a blind curve on a hilly road, the official said. A rescue operation was immediately launched and the injured were evacuated to a nearby hospital where one of the critically injured BSF personnel succumbed to his injuries, he said. Four people died when a trailer crashed into their van near Ratangarh in Churu district of Rajasthan, police said on Thursday. The accident happened late Wednesday when the trailer collided head-on with a van moving in the opposite direction, they said. Three persons travelling in the van died on the spot. The fourth, who was seriously injured, succumbed during treatment at a hospital, the officials added. The deceased have been identified as Kaluram, Dilip Kumar, Nemichand and Prabhuram, police said, adding their bodies have been handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem examination. Efforts are on to nab the trailer driver, who fled the crime site after the accident, they added.
Forty people, including several children, were injured on Friday when a footbridge collapsed in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, officials said. The incident took place at Beni Sangam in the Bain village of Chenani block during Baisakhi celebrations, they said. People in large numbers were on the bridge when it collapsed, the officials said. The bridge collapsed due to overloading as large number of people were on it at the time of the accident, Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar told PTI. There is no causality, he added. Four passenger buses and a truck collided near a Hong Kong road tunnel on Friday and about 70 people were injured, including children. Most of the injuries were minor. The accident occurred after midday near a tunnel entrance on Tseung Kwan O Road in Lam Tin, a residential area in Kowloon. Some 60 people sustained light injuries and around nine others suffered more serious injuries, police said. It was unclear what caused the collision. Scores of firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene. Several people lay on stretchers and at least one passenger was seen being helped out of a vehicle. A window on the side of a bus was shattered. Some of the injured, including elderly people, were treated by paramedics at the scene.
